Asking the man to bid against himself there. Why would he do that? He has it listed at 3500, that's his price/offer. Now is when you counter offer, he mulls it over and either counters back or declines entirely.
It's simple stuff. I can't get my head around these types of questions to sellers.

good observation.
people who say crap like that are the type who are time wasters but really don't have means to buy. in economics its called effective demand. real buyers with means don't act foolish.
to wit, i never heard from him after i asked him to pm his strongest offer.
its along the lines of people who call vendors and tie them up for hours getting knowledge and information about their build when they had no intention of ever buying from that vendor in the first place. Thankfully some vendors have wizened up and dont waste their time with "maybe" buyers that have no money.
