Default Thinking about an 06 GTO, need your guys input

Like the title says. I found an 06 Torrid Red GTO A4 6.0L for about $20K with 45,000 miles on it. I had an 07 Monte SS before and I fell in love with LS motors. Now I'm driving an 05 Toyota Tacoma X runner, and I want an LS powered car again. My main questions are about the trans. How are the auto trans in the 06? How much power can they hold? It will be my daily driver and I'll probably do most bolt on stuff. Intake, headers, exhaust, rockers, maybe heads and cam someday. The main reason I got rid of my 07 Monte SS is because the trans was going out and I didn't have $1,500-2,500 to have it built. I just don't want to buy another car with trans issues. Would I be better waiting for a manual? Would it take more abuse? Any input would be appreciated.

the only thing i dont like about the auto is its a 4 speed but its a 4l60e pretty basic tranny used in the trucks holds decent power i dont know if it would hold the power from heads and cam might have to build it. the m6 i think will hold up a lot better for abuse and bolt ons. i have a 06 m6 and its my daily with intake tune exhaust and putting a cam in soon i have no problem with my tanny or using it for a daily. depends on what you prefer to drive. i would go find a m6 and test drive both to see what you like better.

Wayyy to much money, especially for an automatic. I paid that much for a car with half the miles 5 years ago.

Hold out for a manual and grab one in the 16-17k range for that mileage.

I totally agree. I just bought my 05 A4 with 84,000 miles for only $12,800. Yes much higher miles but its clean and isnt hurt. $20,000 is a *** ton for a A4 Goat.... with over 5,000 miles

OP,
You can always buy my 06. less mileage and only asking 19K lightly modded. In perfect condition.

That is kind of on the high side to pay for that GTO, unless you really want that one, you can do better. The A4 is a reliable tranny for moderate build - ups. I don't consider it a weak spot at all. It should hold up to basic mods in a DD just fine. If you add a stall at some point (typically after a cam) be sure and add a tranny cooler.

I agree, way too much...I paid 18.5K for my '06 M6 w/ 19K miles on it back in '09 in showroom condition (actually it was on the showroom floor lol).

Well I found an 06 PBM M6 with 5,150 miles on it for $23,000. I'm picking it up monday morn. Pics will follow shortly after. Damn near a brand new car. Lowest mileage car I've ever owned. Now to sell parts off my truck I'm trading to start modding the GTO. Thanks for your input

First thing you should do is remove the FRCs from the motor they have a pretty higher fire risk from rubbing the fuel line. The suspension should also be the next thing to check these cars have a pretty bad strut rub issue.

i personally dont discriminate against the autos as sometimes i think it would be easier to have the auto especially a built auto for what i eventually want out of the car. I can say i love the manual and i only have a 04 ls1. I paid $12,700 for mine a little over a year ago and it had 48K on it. I do agree and think 20K is pretty pricey

The engine covers will be the first thing to go. I've been doing my research for sure. Then I'm gna check that wiring harness by the back of the glove box. I've got plans for this car for sure. Its just gna take time and money ha ha. I've got 2 co workers I've gotta embarrass with this car. The one with the 96 cobra is gna b too easy. Its 4.6 dohc n/a with CAI, headers, and exhaust. He thinks its the fastest best handling car in the world. He's sorely mistaken. Second guy has a neon srt-4 with way too much of mommy and daddy's money in it. That one will b more of a challenge, but shouldn't take too much. I just wanna make him cry.

For 20K it should have lower mileage and be a manual trans or have some serious mods.

For a car you're planning to drive I probably would have sought one with higher mileage and paid a bit less.

If you financed this car and you put a ton of miles on it you're going to be upside down in no time, residual value falls even faster when you mod it.

Keep searching bro, i looked for a year, found a 13,000 mile, silver gto stick, for 18gs. Search search search, and be willing to drive. Also, if miles isnt an issue, the price gets lower. I would look for a 60k plus mile gto that has a rebuilt suspension(they are so soft stock, its not good) and go that route. My next one will probably cost me 10gs or less. Anyways good luck, i love Gtos new an old they are AMAZING cars. Best part, hardly anyone has em.

I got the PBM M6 GTO with 5,150 miles today. The car is immaculate. It is showroom quality and was actually in the showroom ha ha. I got a great deal on it and a decent amount on my 05 x runner. I plan on keeping this car for a long long time and keeping the mileage down on it. Thanks for all your guys input. I absolutely love this car and its a beast stock. i can't wait to mod it. I will post some pics within the next few days.
