So my 02 trans am is still basically stock, i ordered the yank ss 3600 stall converter for the automatic transmission, and upon installing it, when i put the car into gear, i cannot get it to move. I revved it as high as 2500 in reverse to try and get it to budge, and nothing. Called up Texas-speed and they said they have never had an issue with this converter, and to try playing with it to see if i can get a response.
So basically I'm wondering, what exactly could me and my friend of done wrong when installing it to cause this problem.
We filled the converter before installing it, and filled the fluid up. Now when i was at the O'Reilys they said that dextron 3 or 6 would work, but the dip stick said dextron 3 only, I'm sure that's not the issue but could it cause any problems?

after you changed the converter how many qts of fluid did it take to get back to the full mark ?

Converter may not be seated correctly or fluid issue would be my guess. GM recommends Dex VI, which is what I've used, besides the 1 time I added a splash of Dex Merc which is basically upgraded Dex III.

i think only three and a half quarts all we used, it never went down as we attempted to move it

Sounds like what "LS-ONE DAY" said could be the issue about the converter not being fully seated and making correct engagement into the pump. Maybe pull one of the trany lines loose at the cooler and start the car for a brief moment and see if you are pumping any fluid ( be sure to try and capture any fluid that is discharged so you don't make a huge mess)

did you measure distance between converter and bellhouseing?....mine was 1"-1/8

If you did not get it fully seated, you took the pump out in the trans (what it sounds like). There has to be 1/8" minimum to 3/8" maximum endplay between the flex plate and the legs on the converter. But, it you did not get it to fully index and seat when installing (as posted above, straight edge on bellhousing and measure to leg face, then do the same from flexplate and block mating surface to determine clearance) then it will take the pump out imediately upon startup.

By taking out the pump, do you mean it shut off knowing something wrong, or i might need a new one?

ya hopefully that didnt happen as it means you will need a new trans. I would check the distance to the flywheel and perhaps pull the tranny and reinspect everything.

sounds like you busted your pump by not having the converter in the trans all the way. Like others have asked, did you seat the converter all the way (3 clicks) and take the time to measure the depth from the bell to the tabs on the converter before putting it in?

Also, you only put 3.5 qts in the trans? did you add a qt to the converter before putting it on the input shaft?

Busted your pump. Sucks but it could be worse. Lesson learned due to installer error.

what does it normaly take to refill a trans fluid after a converter swap?

well did you drain the entire trans or just drop the pan? if you did the whole trans then it should take like 10 or 11 includign the one in the converter. dont quote me on that I could be wrong, but I think thats how many mine took I dont remember.

Mine with a deep pan took around 8-9 on a rebuild, every time I've pulled the pan and valve body it's taken 4-5 qts.

I'm guessing like others said the converter wasn't properly seated and the pump is now ruined if the fluid level doesn't drop between engine off and engine running.
