Default 5.3 to 5.7L LS1

I have a bare block 5.3l that has been bored and honed to a 5.7L LS1 spec's...I would like to build this engine, which way 5.3 or LS1 would be the better cost and power wise...all I have right now...is the block and stock 5.3L crankshaft...I will be going with a carb. of course and not looking for really big HP...maybe somewhere around 425-450hp at most...using stock 243 heads...would like to keep c/r around 10:1 or 10:5... any inputs with internal parts ie..cam, pistons, rockers welcome....even if I only get 400hp out of it...that would be cool too...tks

5.3, 5.7 and 6.0 all have the same stroke. If your 5.3 is bored to 5.7 bore you are building a 5.7 now. Good luck with your build.

Good cam flat top pistons and a slight mill on the heads and/or a quick port and polish and you should be able to make your power goals

I would run the 5.3 with the stock crank and the bigger ls1 pistons obviously....the 243 are a great budget head, I port/polished a set and you can def feel the difference from stock ls1 heads that's for sure, if you aren't looking for monster power the tried and true 224 will please you I would bet...do the usual cam upgrades such as hardened pushrods and good valve springs like comp 918s and a stock ls6 oil pump.you could prob get away with a 650cfm carb unless you wanna just run a 750 and jet it down (maybe not you have to see) I personally prefer vacuum secondaries on the street...again if a street car the edelbrock performer intake is the way to go just make sure you don't buy the combo with the Edelbrock MSD box, buy the performer and MSD 6010 box separate! This will alow you to tune the timing and vacuum advance manually...none of these parts are exotic and you may be able to find them used for a good deal if you pound the classifieds...I'm finishing up a ground up frame off restoration on an 81 camaro with carbed all aluminum 243 head 5.3 and I'm right at $5000 which I think is pretty damn good considering I started with just a beat down rolling chassis, anyway good luck and dust some mustangs lol...

well I have been looking at camshafts and I am thinking maybe the edelbrock 2215, some cleaned and ported/polished 241/243 heads, springs/hardened pushrods, stock 5.3/5.7L crankshaft, new flattop pistons, edel..intake, msd 6010 ign box, stock rockers ?, 650cfm, attached to a 700r4 tranny/unless I can find a really good deal on a t56......3:73 rear gears....this engine build will be going into my 88mcss...

The 5.3 at a 3.9 bore with ported 243s and a 2215 cam would make 450 HP or so. Would have a nice quick idle, drive great and still pull pretty hard and not require much converter. It will EAT a 700R4...

TH350, TH400, 4L80, a built 700R will last for a while as well as a 4L60. that is built.

I have a 2002 ls-1 that I just spun a rod bearing in, building an lq-9 stroker, I'm gonna get rid of the block & cam, pretty low milage, but needs the crank turned. Has a custom Predator Z cam 230/230 612/591 111+2. ran good in my car. getting rid of it cheap if you're interested. Need to get junk out of my garage.

What do you want for it? Cam doesn't interest me, but i have another crank for it.

I'm not sure where you are, I'm in Rochester NY, so not sure if getting it is an issue. I'll sell it for a few hundred bucks. The engine has low mileage, just put rings in it last year along with ARP rod bolts, I'v got to keep oil pump, timing chain, covers etc... for new engine. Got to make room in my garage...way too much junk!!...lol

5.7L.. I believe I will be using some rebuilt/ported 241 heads, with the Edelbrock 2215 cam...new flattop LS1 pistons, stock rods, new pushrods, stock rockers, 5.3L crankshaft, basic 5.7L (ls1) internals...650-750cfm carb...msd 6010, ...what maybe the HP/TQ for this setup....tks

Would you ship it? Really all i would need is the bare block with just the main caps. Just the block isn't all that heavy. It most likely spun a rod bearing without having the rods honed after the ARP bolts installed.

Well a 5.7 stock ls1 with the 2215 and unported stock heads made 420 hp from what edelbrock said.

ok so here is what my setup will be....

5.3L bored/honed to 5.7L...5.3L stock repolished 10/10 crankshaft w/new bearings, stock connecting rods w/new bearings, new edelbrock 2215 camshaft w/new bearings, new LS1 flattop pistons w/rings, new LS1 lifters, new hardened pushrods, stock rockers,
new springs kit (maybe the 918's), rebuilt/ported/valve job 241 heads, edel intake, msd 6010 ign box, rod's muscle car LS headers (mid-length)...either th400/200r4/t-56 tranny...not sure which tranny yet...carb. 650-750 cfm dp....

will this be a good setup to get atleast 425HP from the engine...any changes welcomed...doing this on a budget...
