Default '95 YJ Swap - Need help IDing engine

So here's the story: Several local junkyards and shops pooled resources to buy a train car at an insurance auction. Supposedly the train derailed, and that car was full of brand new iron block 5.3L Gen IV engines, on their way to be dropped into new Chevy Silverados. I managed to snag one of these for a fraction of the usual 0-miles crate engine price, so here I am.

The problem: according to the FSM, the VIN is scribed or stamped on the heads in a particular spot at the vehicle factory. Well, this never made it to the vehicle factory, so it has the crate stickers on it but I can't find a VIN to get a positive ID on it.

Anybody able to help?

I've attached pictures of the engine, the number stamped on the block, the number engraved on the heads, and a barcode sticker that was pasted in a couple spots around the engine.

I couldn't find anything on the casting number on the block, maybe cause its a new engine, the list I used is a older one. 706 heads came on 5.3s though.

Thanks for the input. That definitely narrows it down. I wasn't even positive it was a 5.3L. Word was that it was coming up from Mexico and I saw somewhere that they make 6.0's down there, but not 5.3's.

Did they also put 706 heads on 4.8's? I'm still having a hard time pinning down the RPO on this engine.

2001 was the last year for a cable throttle Silverado.
The G vans were the last hold out with DBC thru '06 anyways.

Thanks, sreve. Do you know if they put cable throttle on the work trucks still? According to the seller, that's where these were headed.

Heck, maybe they still make Gen III engines for the work trucks?

Really wishing I new what the number on that barcode sticker meant...

No that was the Express vans only and '08 was the last year for DBC.
I believe the van intakes are different from the P\Us you could run the
#s on that but it appears you have an LM7 5.3L

check out this sales ad on Ebay.....

Okay, I did some more digging and found this diagram:

Oddly, I couldn't find a diagram showing the location of the VLOM in the factory info I have.

I don't have the engine with me to verify the pin count on the connector, but it sure looks like I have the VLOM connector on my engine from the attached photo.

Could that be something else?

Sure enough, that agrees with the FSM exploded views for Gen III engines. Thanks again sreve.

On to the next question. What do you recommend for an ECM? Right now I'm leaning toward getting one from a junkyard and sending it to Novak for programming.

That'll work, it's 24x crank trigger so '99 - '02 411pcm
There was a guy on ebay selling some for about $100
shipped that would put a file in it.
