T56 weirdness - 6th gear 1:1?
Today I looked at an LS1 T56 I was considering for an LS3/T56 swap into my 69 Camaro. When I was confirming the gear ratios by turning the output shaft and counting the turns of the input shaft everything checked out until I got to 6th gear. Instead of .5 turns of the input shaft for one turn of the output, 6th gear gave a full turn of the input for a full turn of the output (I.e. 1:1). Any ideas on why this would be the case? The trans had apparently been used in a drag car and had been built by 6-Speed Inc. (now out of business).

Maybe they built it as a ULTRA close ratio box (but I don't think the gearsets to do that are even made for these boxes??)???
Or, are you SURE it is not a T56 with the two overdrive gears removed (as so many do to T56es for drag AND sometimes road racing)? Are these still in the case?

Thanks for the replies guys. When I found out the trans came out of a drag car I wondered whether the gearing could have been changed to different ratios, but 1st through 5th were the correct factory ratios (as listed in this good T56 writeup: http://www.camaros.net/forums/showthread.php?t=98387 ). As far as going back into 4th instead of 6th, the seller and I tried the 5-6 shift three or four times to confirm we were getting into the proper gear, so I'm pretty sure we were in what was supposed to be 6th. I wasn't comfortable opening the case to look at the configuration.

Thanks moge11. You may be right, and if that's the case I wonder if there could have been an issue with the shifter? We were just using the stub end of the shifter, so maybe we weren't getting enough leverage - but we sure thought we were...

i dont think anyone makes gears to make 6th 1:1 , so that right there is more than likely going into 4th . Also why worry its a t56 , the 93 fbody had the different ratio and gtos got a different one also.

My main reason for being concerned about 6th was that the person selling it said he never used 6th gear while the trans was installed in his rat rod, and prior to the rat rod the trans had been installed in a car that was only used on the strip. I had read about "6th gear delete" when rebuilding a T56 for the strip, so I really just wanted to make sure 6th was there. I wasn't as concerned about whether 6th was .5 (which it should have been) or .62.
