Default How to paint chrome wheels gunmetal metallic

I started a project the other day and figured I would snap some shots along the way to record the process.

Supplies needed will be:

Sand paper- 60, 120, and 320 grit
Acetone
self etching primer
paint
clear coat
low adhesive painters tape

Primer and bar code

#2080 3m painter tape

Now for the condition of the rims to start.

I'm using my stock rims to mount slicks on so I'll only be doing 2 rims as a test to see if I like the color on the car. I'll be doing my c6 z06 rims at a later date(they will be powder coated for daily use).

First step is to clean and sand using 60 grit

you can see the change from the lower right to the upper left

backside is a nightmare, but again these rims are my track rims so I'm just not that concerned about them, if I wanted a longer lasting finish I probably would have sand blasted these.

after I was happy with the smooth finish on the face of the wheels I switched to 120 dry, then 320 wet. the back was left at 120 dry.
at this point I was ready to clean with acetone and lay down some primer.

next step was self etching primer, backside first then moved to the front.

next was *LIGHTLY* wet sanding the primer

I washed the rims down with clean water and let them fully dry before painting

I let the wheels dry for 30 minutes then hit them with the clear coat.

now for the results!

really love how the metallic changes with the light.

I would post some pics in the sun but sunny Florida is not so sunny today. Ill have some up tomorrow or asap depending on the weather.
I haven't order my tires yet and im in the process of installing an sts kit on the car so it'll be a long while before I can say how these are going to hold up long term. I would like to think they will be fine for many years of occasional Friday night test and tune use. Ill update the post in a few months with the condition of the rims.

This is exactly how I did my black rims. They look really good, the only downside I had was if you scrap them on anything the paint comes off so easily revealing the chrome.

Nice I got a NBM WS-6 and would like to see how this looks on the stock wheel? Do you think the same can be done if it's with bronze color? I'm thinking a bronze would look bad *** with NBM
