Going Carb'd
Monday I will begin my quest to install a carb'd 5.3 in my 98 TransAm. I am sure there will be obstacles to overcome but it will happen. The motor is a stock 5.3 with a Tsunami cam, springs, etc. It has been VERY low 10's in a first gen Camaro with a 100 shot. My goal is a 9 sec car that I can drive anywhere. We'll see what happens. Will post pics and time slips as progress is made.

Yes. Going with a glide. I have a rear end out of an SLP Camaro, It has 3.42 gears with an Auburn posi unit. We'll see how that gear works out. More of a trial than anything else. If I like that gear or wish I had more, I am going to go with a 9" with whatever gear I feel I need.

I know it's not the best but it's what I have. I plan to get it running and the bugs worked out of it first. Then I will go with a better rear end, probably a 9". May even go with mini tubs, narrow the rear and get some fat skin under it. And hey, I can always leave on a little more spray to compensate!

I was out of town today. Swap will start tomorrow. Will post a few "before" pics tomorrow. We did look at the cowl real close this evening. I think that since all I have to clear is the carb, we can limit the trimming as much as possible and then install a 1/4 to 1/2" metal "lip" at the opening created in the cowl to make it functional. I think this will route any rain to the remaining plastic cowl, preventing water reaching the caRB.

I've had the motor out for a few days now. First time removing engine from an F body. Pretty straight forward. I would guess that next time it would be a 2 hour job start to finish. Got all the an fittings and hose in to plumb the fuel lines along with the Areomotive regulator. Carb will ne here tomorrow. Once I get the motor in, I will need exhaust and lengthen the drive shaft. Should be moving in a day or do. Also, had to have the block drilled and tapped for an alternator mounting hole that the 5.3 block didn't have. I will post some pics when I figure out how to load them to new laptop from phone.

Swapped oil pan off the LS1 for clearance. Swapped out pulleys so accessories will work. Got the alt hole drilled and tapped. Carb came in and if all goes well will have pics of cowl trimming and motor install soon.

Update. Cranked the motor tonight. Problem with fuel system though. The return line actually runs to the evap canister. This causes an odd looking fitting that has wires plugged to it to puke gas like all hell. It is located above rear end attached to under side of body. Looking at posts related to bypassing canister.

Yes. The second line under hood goes to the canister located in fenderwell behind rear tire on driver's side. I will either run an 8 an return line to tank connected with a bulkhead fitting (most likely) or use the line that goes to canister and re-route it to tank, bypassing canister.

In all the posts I've read about doing this to a 4th gen no one has ever made mention of what to do with the fuel lines. I was hoping someone who's done it would chime in and help you. The EVAP canister isn't really needed right? If it's like older cars it's just an emissions thing. Not having to run new fuel lines would be nice... So where is the return line if the second line under the hood is for the EVAP canister?

Im not completely understanding why you would go to all the trouble to run a return line for low pressure carb setup. Is it because you are looking to use the factory EFI in tank pump? Knock a hole in the lower part of the fuel tank, install a bung for the fuel line and get a low pressure carb fuel pump . Dead head it to the carb and run like the wind ,bullseye !
