Went to pull my T-56 today, drained fluid and moved out of the way first thing, then went to look at it like 2 hours later and this is what I see? WTF? brass sand basically?

I would recommend having it looked at asap. It could be burning up the reverse blocking ring (the only bronze part in a stock T56). Were you having any trouble getting the trans in reverse?

Run a magnet around in the fluid and see if it is magnetic

I have the trans out of the car and ready to take apart hopefully tomorrow....

I had only experienced difficulty with the shifter getting stuck into 2nd gear on several occasions, just drove the car this morning for 20 mins and it happened probably 2 times out of like 50+ shifts. No weird noises and no other strangeness. This Trans was just installed in the car and has less than 50 miles on it since then, new oil etc.... Not sure what the story will be.

Thanks for the all the suggestions I'll try the magnet also but I think its clearly just brass.

It shouldn't look anything like that, mine looked better after 85k miles.

If it weren't such an expensive picture it would be kind of cool.

So it sounds like this tranny was just built? Clearly something was done very wrong.

Does it have bronze fork pads in it? Since it is a fresh install I'd say something may have went back together wrong in the rebuild. Maybe the wave spring was left out between the reverse gear and the reverse synchronizer ring. But it is all speculation till you get in there and check it out.

the trans is a used unit i purchased for conversion which supposedly had low miles. I did an inspection and changed out the 3/4 shift fork to steel as the only upgraded parts. Everything else is factory parts no bronze anything except that reverse piece and it looks completely fine to me. the spring was installed when i took it all apart today. Here's some pics in my other thread....
