Default modest LQ4 into a 1968...journey of a 1,000 miles starts with the first step

So it starts. I picked up my LQ4 and now I'm starting the process of assembling all the parts for the swap into my 1968 Camaro RS.

My goals:

400+ rwhp & torque with a broad torque and horsepower curve.
2,000 - 6,800 RPM range

How I Plan on Getting there:

Stock LQ4 intake

799 Heads with dual valve springs

Howard's Cams LS1 LS2 LS6 CHEVY 224/230 .609/.604 112° camshaft

Stock rotating assembly

Hedman Husler mid-length headers 1 3/4 primaries 3 inch collector

Performance tune

What I have already purchased:
The LQ4 from a 2000 GMC Sierra - 120,000 miles

Used stock pistons and rods from an LS2

Melling Hi-Flow oil pump

Soon to happen purchases:
Stock crankshaft from an LS1/LS2, cleaned and machined (evidently my crankshaft won't work with the T-56)

Rebuild kit with rings and bearings

LS2 timing chain kit

Mast swap oil pan OR Moroso swap oil pan?? Haven't decided yet

Machine Work Planned
LQ4 Block hot tanked and magnafluxed possibly blueprinted

Crankshaft, rods and pistons rotated and balanced

Garage Work Planned
Harness
I will remove, catalog, clean, and modify the harness and sensors. I plan on modifying the harness myself. I know its tedious but I don't have a ton of money to spend on a swap harness and I don't mind putting in the hours.

Long Block
Disassemble the long block. All parts will be cleaned and cataloged.

Default Harness removal

Harness has been removed and all connectors cataloged. I've never modified a harness before but I'm willing to give it a shot.

I took a picture of each connector and tagged it so I can reference what the connector was attached to later while I'm modifying the harness.

A lot of connectors going to smog related stuff I could already tell were going to get eliminated. Some connectors are going to sensors/equipment I have no clue about.

Soon I will be disassembling the engine and cataloging those parts as well.

Then the machine shop!

That was you? Kudos! Wiring has been something that I figured I'd always shy away from, but your article really showed it can be much less intimidating -- and a LOT more affordable if one is willing to put a little time into it.

Absolutely! When I read the article , picture #5 mentioned something about a wiring diagram included in the article but I couldn't find it. I went to the GM High-Tech website and couldn't find it it there either.

Do you have a link or a file you could send me?

For some reason, I can't post photos, only the LS2 Pistons and Rods went up

BUT...

I now currently have an LS2 Rotating assembly and a Melling Performance Oil Pump [the 10296] and I have a lead on some good used 799 heads.

Planned for this week, disassembly of the LQ4 down to the bare block. This week is short because of Thanksgiving so the block will be off to the machine shop in a week for hot tank, magnaflux.

The crankshaft will be sent to Ed's Crankshafts in Hayward for machining.

Once everything is together, assembly of the short block and purchase of the oil pan and camshaft

Thinking about getting the 799's milled for more compression...

Hopefully, I can figure out why I can't post more than one photo.

If you can hold out a little longer I have a book coming out with everything you'll need to know about doing the swap including all the wiring diagrams.

I'll see if I can send you one.

Just pre-ordered the book, I was looking for a book specific to First Gen F-body LS swap and there wasn't really anything out there. Thanks for reading my mind! lol

So do you have to change the crank to run a manual tranny if the motor came from an automatic vehicle? you said you had to change yours to make it work. Just wondering.
