Default Hot rodding a 2010 camaro ss

Hello all, my name is Joe and I own a shop called Joe's Garage in central Illinois. I have two other build threads on ls1 tech. They are personal projects. One is project LSXpress my 4link turbocharged LS2 dragster. The other is project Shop Rag mine and my dad's LQ4/LS3 powered 1965 El Camino drag car. Now I am proud to bring you this build. I Have cam swaped and built a handful of LS powered vehicles and this one is the coolest of my customer builds because it is mint 5th gen L99 auto with only 20k miles on it.
So far I have pulled the engine, converter, entire exhaust, trans computer, and rear end. I am doing away with the dod and vvt. I am doing a 3 bolt comp cam from Texas Speed, ls7 lifters, TSP cnc'd LS3 heads, lunati dual spring kit, LS3 intake valves, LS3 timing and valley covers, Precision 10" 3200rpm converter, 3.91gears, Texas Speed 2" primary long tube headers with dual 3" straight thru to magnaflow mufflers, and a PCM/TCM tune from Texas Speed. There will be some other mods as well. I will get pics up ASAP. Thanks for looking!

Sounds like a wicked build, but why not keep the VVT?

Myself and the owner of the car both decided it wasn't worth keeping. VVT has it use in some situations where you want to get more low end torque, but with the 229/236 cam from Texas Speed along with milling the heads .020" I feel this thing will have great power across the board. The owner of the car is from old school sbc days. He likes the idea of keeping it simple.

I can't get pics up from my iPhone thru the app. I will try to get them on photo bucket tonight and then on here. Yesterday I got the heads off, dod valley plate off, vvt timing cover off, cam out, new cam in, and new ls3 timing cover back on. I will check Ptvc and make sure I have room to mill the heads. Then the heads are getting sent to Texas Speed for cnc and milling. I have the rear end out and it is getting sent to RPM transmissions for the gear swap. Once the heads are back I will check Ptvc one more time then measure for pushrod length. It is also getting a powerbond damper, TCI flexplate, boxed rear control arms, and a BMR full subframe connecter kit.

Well it did load some pics. I will try a few more. I am also doing the comp trunnion bearing upgrade to the stock rockers. I do that on all my builds and feel that it is cheap insurance!

I'm starting to see more VVT setups that are outperforming some ls3 and ls3 conversions.
None the less looking forward to the finished product!

Yea. Some are successful keeping the VVT. My customer was originally wanting to supercharge this, but I convinced him to go this route. He will have a hot rod with more mods and similar power for similar dollars. He does not plan to race it or compete with anyone. He just wants a hot rod. This will be a reliable car with all the amenities of a new car and the power to get it sideways at will. That is what he wants.

Just adding 3.91s to the pumpkin or upgrading more? And I like that you ended with them 2" headers too!

Since it is just a street car, I am only doing gears. They are the gm 3.91 gears (if they are in stock yet) The rest of the drive line should be able to handle the extra power with the lack of street traction being the fuseable link. The 2" headers are very nice pieces from Texas Speed. I did a cam and catless exhaust on a 4th gen ls1 last Sumer, and I used the 1 7/8" Texas Speed headers and off road y pipe. I was very impressed with the fit and finish of their products. For the money, they are hard to beat.

I had my customer with said 4th gen take my 5th gen customer for a ride. The 4th gen ls1 6spd car has ls6 intake, slp lid, cam, comp 918 springs, 1 7/8" headers, 3" y back to a 1into 2 magnaflow. It is making a tick over 400whp and is a blast to drive. When they got back from the drive, my 5th gen customer ask me if his car will run that good? I told him his car will mop up on that 4th gen as it will have another 100 hp and will pull like a freight train all the way to 6500+rpm. He had a smile on his face for sure.

We live 50 minutes north of Gateway international raceway at St. Louis. We are 3.5 hours from Indy. And 3ish hours from Joliet. We also have 4 1/8 mile tracks within 1.5-2.5 hours away. We have not started racing yet. My dad used to bracket race before I was born. He gave it up to raise 3 boys. We have always went to every drag race we could to watch and I have loved it since I was a little boy. I have been putting my dragster together for the last 3 years. Nothing like starting out in a 6 second dragster. Lol. I built my El Camino about 4 years ago and it was just sitting in my shop taking up space. One night we were talking at the shop and I told my dad that I would donate the El Camino and we would build it as a drag car for him/us to race and it would be a father/son project. They should both be done by summer and we will be on the track somewhere. Sorry for the detailed answer. Lol

The LSD in the factory rear is crap. You may want to try to put a trutrack in while you have it pulled apart. Nothing worse than doing one wheel burnouts trying to show off.

Heads are at Texas Speed getting cnc treatment. I am having them milled .010. I checked Ptvc with the new cam. I had .092 on the intake and don't want to drop below .080. Tsp told me I could go .020 with that cam but I am the one that is responsible for this build I am keeping it within recommended specs. As soon as I get them back I will measure for push rods. I am busy with day to day stuff in my shop but I should have this back together in the next 3-4 weeks. It will be nice to have that lift back. Lol

Got the heads back plus a bunch of extra stuff. I will get the heads on and measure for pushrods and then this thing should come together nicely. I will post pics of all the goodies and such. We are still waiting on the GM 3.91 gears. I hope the get in soon.

I think half the owners out there are waiting on 3.91's right now. :/
