Default Tuning Bosch 160# vs. SMP 160#

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Looking for a set of injectors for my TT build and searching around threads it seems like the majority of people have issues tuning idle with the low imp white top Bosch 160# injectors. Racetronix has some flowmatched SMP 160# injectors going for about the same price $550 that are supposedly better for tuning. quote from Racetronix:

Unlike the old Bosch 160# LPG injectors which were not a true low-z injector, these are. The 2-ohm coil allows for full peak current and maximum field saturation using P/H drivers. Faster and much more linear than the old models even at elevated pressures.

Does anyone have experience with these, or can say they believe they would be a better for tuning than the Bosch? Planning on running them with a driver box on E85

I've worked with the Bosch LPG injectors alot. (mostly with 4 cyls) For me they were a pain in the lower duty cycles and work fine everywhere else. So cruise and idle were not the best.

The racetronics SHOULD perform much better. If they are similar in price I'd go for it to avoid the headache.

We would pick up the LPG 160's for around 40-60 an injector though. Nothing else cam close in price back then.

Our 01D164x 160# injectors are a true low impedance injector having a 2 ohm coil. This means that they will work properly with peak/hold drivers.

The Bosch 160s were a 6 ohm injector so the P/H drivers would never reach full saturation and hold currents.

I should have specified that i plan to run them on one factory ECU, I have heard they are fine on a stand alone ECU.

You are planning to run low impedance injectors on a factory ECU? Hope you are including an injector driver...

Same-bit the problem was easier the deal with with a larger motor. 2.4L 4 bangers worked ok-the 1.6l were basically impossible to get a consistent idle. Honestly, on a 5.3+I dont see an issue on e85 as you should be out of the "problem area" of pulse-width with this injector-

I think most people are going to say “Why not just run a set of 1600cc/min and be done?”. Well if you have ever tried to use or tune 1600cc injectors they run terrible with anything under 2 millisecond opening time. This ultimately means that idle and light partial throttle is very choppy due to the very unlinear flow from the injectors under 2 millisecond opening time. Below is a 2D graphical chart to display why these ID 2000cc injectors work so well compared to the typical 1600cc on the market:

ID2000vsBSH1600

As the chart illustrates under 2 millisecond range you can visually see how unlinear the 1600cc injectors are operating, and how linear the ID 2000cc are operating. This is the difference of being able to dial in a solid 13-14 a/f ratio under idle and 14-15 a/f partial throttle driving, something that is unheard of with 1600cc’s. Going further with the chart, you can see about 80-85% duty (above 9~9.5 ms range) cycle range that the deviation on the 1600cc’s can be as much as 10-15% richer. This ultimately makes tuning with the injectors at high duty cycle range very difficult and unpredictable. Tony from T1 Race Development was able to put a set of these ID 2000cc injectors into a bone stock Integra LS to illustrate how well these run in the following video:

So you'd run a 5.3 at no less than 2ms? I dont think thats going to work well.

Just bought a set of Racetronix 160's last night. $580 shipped for a flow matched set of 8. I'll let you know how they work out.

Great man! Eager to see how they work out, at that price they are a steal too.

So along with poor tuning ability, others are saying that the idle is very rich with low z 160# Bosch injectors and a driver box. Would these new SMP injectors cure that issue as well?

Forcefed86 did you get the results you wanted with the SMP's from Racetronix?

Man that sucks, keep us posted. I was considering buying high z Bosch but just got a versafueler for $125, couldn't pass up that deal. so with the SMP 160's and this driver Ill save a good chunk of cash over the high z injectors...anxious to see how they do for you. Most guys on YB seem to like them a lot.

Holley has a 160 out now. One of the local shops has them in stock too. Thats what I plan on getting when my holley 120s are done.

Awesome THADD keep us posted.

I have heard the new Hollers are the same injectors Racetronix is selling, their price of $560 is pretty hard to beat for a matched set. I really hope these turn out to be as good as people are making them sound.

I couldn't get my Bosch 160's to pulse lower than 2.7ms. I tried absolutely everything and it would not idle above 13.5afr. It idled fine though and wasn't so rich that it burned your eye *****. Cruising and full throttle was good. I was using factory ecu with 3.5ohm load resistors wired on series with each injector. For the price I think their an ok injector to run. I got mine for like $320 or something. But if you don't like headaches and hours and hours of research and screwing around with them I suggest you don't buy them.

Well the first step is to not just use resistors but to use a real peak/hold driver box with the factory ECU or use an aftermarket box that can run them. It will get them to snap open quicker and the lower pulse widths won't be so shitty. They can definitely idle lower than 2.7ms which sounds like it was a setting in the PCM that was the problem.

Yeah I wasn't going to pay for a peak/hold box. Might as well just pay a little more for a high impedence injector if still on the stock ecu.
