Default 60-130 vs M3 then this....

Raced my brothers 08 M3 last night from 60 to about 130 ( won by 2 cars btw) when the service stability screen pops on and the abs goes nuts and the V tries to head right and left while trying to kill me. I got on the brakes but the abs was preventing me from stopping as fast as I wanted. Got her slowed down after a few seconds but needless to say that seriously pissed me off.

Did some research and it sounds like a SWPS but anyone have any other opinions?

Thanks,

Dave

Yeah I am thinking either the SWPS, abs sensor or Yaw sensor but not sure how to tell which without taking it to the dealer which I would like to avoid.

My service stability system light has been coming on after hitting potholes even at low speed. I wonder if it's related to any of those sensors.

Dave - I don't think there's a way to narrow it down without the dealership's help.

Bud - I would be more inclined to think yours is a wheel speed sensor going back. Over the years I've had one that developed a break in the harness, and another that just plain old died for no apparent reason (with only about 10-12k miles on the hub).

I'd have a look at this myself. I had a similar situation where the abs light would come on if I hit a bump while turning to the right. Inspected each wheel speed sensor for broken wires, cleaned the contacts then reassembled with dielectric grease to inhibit water intrusion and have had no problems with it ever since.

You sure that's a good preventive measure? When the stability system malfunctions, I thought it switched to failsafe settings and would sometimes behave erratically. I've had the Service Stability System message pop up which then prevented me from disabling it. Perhaps if you disable it first, it won't happen, but once it malfunctions, you can't turn it on/off.

True. I've had that message but only in cold weather, and most of the time, from turning the steering wheel from a dead stop.

Yeah needless to say it was a very upsetting deal and really gives me no confidence in the car. I have road raced for years with my mustangs and thank god or there would be a totaled m3 and V on the side of the road.

I went to the dealer and told them that if I would have crashed GM would have a lawsuit. Unreal that when a system fails the car tries to kill you. There should be a warning light sure but not any violent reaction from the car. Called GM support and they are getting back to me. I will not pay 125 from the dealer for a faulty system. Just need to figure out which sensor is bad then I will replace myself.

Might just sell it and buy a newer Z06 or Camaro as long as the systems are not the same. If so its the GT500 which sucks because I like the V.

The reason it pulled you to the side is a sensor went haywire. Then the system realized it was malfunctioning and shut off thats why you were able to regain control. When you shut it off it doesn't give the sensor any input on breaking if it malfunctions

I agree don't disable the systems. I'm sorry to hear, and yes the Camaro and 'vette basically use the same system, if not the EXACT same system just tailored to that car's specs.

If I keep my cutouts open (right under the center console...near the yaw sensor from what I understand) and don't disable traction/stability than I'll get a very similar response nearly all of the time.

The "service traction/stability" message pops up and ABS usually grabs a wheel and pulls me over a lane. It happened the day I had the cutouts installed and I figured it out right away (after nearly crapping myself as well). If I don't disable traction/stability, it will happen almost every single time.

I've also heard of this happening if you damaged a sensor somewhere along the way (from hitting a pothole or some road debris). Check your sensors and report back...

I dont see why you would want stability control on? You shouldnt rely on it to keep you safe.

I know its not the same car but my wifes audi was doing the same thing and it ended up being the yaw sensor. The car would think it was sliding even though it wasnt and apply a brake to try and correct.
