Default 2008 4.8L, opinions, good or bad please

It is from a wrecked truck and I wanted to know the goods and bads of the motor for my swap. Complete with accessories. Planning on swapping it into my mustang.

Let me know what you think performance wise and reliability.

Thanks

That is a great price and they are really good when boosted!

4.8's are good little motors. I like them. I would run it, especially for 220.

I'm curious where you got the idea that there was a 'bad' LS motor.

Maybe I gave the wrong impression here. I am not saying it is a bad motor. I am just trying to make sure I am not missing anything that is problematic or issues with this specific year. From the research I have done they are an awesome motor but I am not sure what heads it should come and how it will perform. If I can run it as is or should I change things on it while it is out which might blow the budget.

There is that old saying "there is no replacement for displacement." a 5.3 is at least $500 more around here and a 6.0 even more than that. This 4.8 will fit into my budget and replace a tired 5.0 that stock was around 225hp.

This would stay stock for a long time but I would love a little boost down the line. More or less looking for horsepower ratings and should I change out things like the oil pump, valve springs etc. since it is out and give me piece of mind.

I,d leave it internally stock for a while at least till the swap is sorted out.

I swapped a 4.8 into my 87 Monte I love it used it to replace my old worn 4.3tbi. I doubled my power and got better mpg. 17 town and 27 highway. I am running 3.42 gears with a 2004r trans. I have driven the car about 15000 miles since the swap with no issues. I think the 4.8 makes a great swap especially for daily drivers.

Actually there are bad LS motors. Google castech heads.
I don't think that will be an issue in an 08, and the price is great.

There is that old saying "there is no replacement for displacement."

Well thats an OLD saying, its was used as excuse before turbos and the LSx came about!

Run the 4.8, maybe a small cam, run a used ls1 intake, get a tune and go!

I have a 4.8 that will be dropped in my 74' 260z. The bottom end is stock rebuilt with new bearings and rings. I have a 04 z06 cam, arp bolts(rods, mains, heads), 241 heads(ls9 HG), TBSS intake, FAST 65lb injectors, 92mm Tb. Its ready for turbo(76mm). I hope to put out at least 550whp but I think it'll push more.

Thanks for all the great information. I picked it up this morning. 70k miles 2008 4.8 with 799 heads, harness and only missing an exhaust manifold. Needs a PCM but pretty much all there. I have been doing a ton of research on this but it really helps to have your guys experience as well.

So, after some research and help/suggestions from local friends here, I am planning on a small cam, upgrading to dual springs and maybe an ls2 intake if I can find one. Then a small tune to wake it up a little bit.

I am going to sell parts from my mustang that i have been collecting for upgrades to help fund some of the build.

Still working on a trans and other large expense items before I tear anything down. But this will get me going for now.

I've got a 4.8 I'm swapping into my notchback- go on youtube and look at what they are putting out- they REALLY like boost- doing a BTR Turbo Cam in mine, Katech rod bolts, ARP main studs and obviously new rings/bearings- supposedly these things can rev the hell out and with just some minor upgrades hold serious power. I'll be going for 750whp on boost and meth

You should get that no problem ! I'll probably go with an On3 turbo, but 550-650 whp in a 2400-2600lb car(260z)is going to be scary.....I can't wait !

Neither motor came with a throttle body. I am guessing I'll need a drive by wire system. What other cars can I snag a throttle by and an entire drive by wire system?

Does anyone know how the 4.8 is as far as torque upgrades go? CAM, springs?
