Default 2002 Stock Camaro Z28 exhaust dilema

I own an 02 z28 that is COMPLETELY stock except for the muffler, which i changed out for a flowmaster 80 series about a year ago. The muffler isnt terrible, but it just isnt loud enough.

Im looking for something around $200-$400 (labor included if it has to be done by a shop) that will drastically increase the loudness of the car. I have heard that the slp loudmouth 1 is basically just a muffler delete, but can anyone tell me from experience if, on stock headers (and cats, and pipes) if it sounds good and is loud? Also can i just buy the muffler for like $80 or do i need the whole system? Are there any other options for me?

Do a new off road Y pipe if emissions isn't an issue.

Emissions is definately an issue. This is my daily driver and it MUST pass inspection.

So is the lm1 a lot louder than the flowmaster on stock manifolds? Cause the flowmaster is louder than the stock muffler, and i obviously dont want to get the lm1 if it isnt gonna be a huge difference over the flowmaster. If yes, can i just buy the muffler and be able to hear the difference or do i need the whole system?

The LM1 sounds amazing on stock manifolds. Due to where the resonator is in the LM1, I don’t think you’d be able to simply replace your muffler though, you’d need to buy the whole system. You can find used ones pretty cheap though ($100-150 range), try checking the parts classifieds.

Correct me if im wrong, but couldnt the dude at the muffler shop just cut the old muffler off and place the lm1 resonator there? It might look weird and he would probably need extra piping, but i dont see why it wouldnt fit. It certainly (from what ive seen) looks a lot smaller than the 80 series muffler. And the clearance should be there for it.

Well actualy no he can't. The lm1 and lm2 are bullet shape. 1 in 1 out. And it goes in the i pipe before the axle. Versus ur flowmaster that has 1 in 2 out. Theres no way to interchange them. Look at the lm1 and see what i mean

I see what you mean.....i totally forgot that the flowmaster has the extra inlet on the one side. Thank you very much.

Well heres my next question.....ive heard the loudmouth is similar to a muffler delete, so could i just remove the muffler all together and still be legal? Or do they look for a muffler during inspection?

If your state requires any sort of visual check, I’m sure they’d notice the lack of a muffler. Another option for you would be to just get a cutout. You can find a manual cutout for like $40 and have it welded in your i-pipe before the muffler, and just leave it uncapped after you pass your inspection.

What state do you live in? Most states do require a muffler for your inspection.

The SLP exhaust will get you the louder sound you're after. Plus, it cleans up under the rear of the car as there won't be a large OEM looking muffler anymore. And they have different options for exhaust tips or you could add your own.

Agreed, sounded good until I started adding LT's and ORY. I ended up selling it and going Magnaflow with electric cutout and like that setup much better.

Ok so the setup that im interested in now is going with a cutout that can be plugged up for inspection. Heres my question:

Being that the car is a single pipe, would a cutout open all the time be TOO loud?? As in, cops will pull me for noise violations and my neighbors will hate my guts just for starting my car? I know it wont bother me, but i obviously dont want to bother cops either. If you guys think it will be fine, i think i might just go with a cutout that can be plugged if necessary. Definately the cheapest option.....i found a cutout on amazon for $50 shipped. Also, for my car would i need 3in or 2.5in??
