Default 96 z/28 Turbo Kit?

Despite that I live in California because I plan on doing this the day after I get my camaro smogged, I plan on putting a turbo in. What all needs to be done in order for the motor to work with the turbo? Estimated 400hp or more.

Read ALL turbo Lt1 builds ask questions on members builds.

Build a forged bottom end around 9:1 compression

Stock pistons won't tolerate boost reliably without less compression, meth/water, good tuning, etc. If you just want 400hp then a turbo is not for you.

I know on the LS side of things guys accomplish amazing things with stock motors and boost. LT1s not so much.

Stock shortblock LT1s are fond of nitrous but not so much boost.

You should be able to make a stock shortblock car quicker with heads and cam than you can boost.

I'd say the biggest problem with the factory engine is that the piston ring end gaps are too tight for boost. Rings expand under heat, the gaps close up and bind. Pair that with brittle, cast hypereutectic pistons = broken ring lands = rebuild. Zero tolerance for detonation. Some people get lucky though.

Honestly, for only ~400hp, I'd recommend that you stay naturally aspirated. Forced induction is such an expensive headache that it's really only reasonable when you're looking to attain power levels beyond that which can be achieved through natural aspiration. Entirely your choice though, this is just an opinion.

Just do boltons and H/C with a good tune and you'll be at 400whp. No reason to go forced induction unless you want 500+.

This.

If you are only looking for around 400hp, then a good H/C/I setup will get you there easily. No need for boost if that is your HP goal....now if you wanted 500+, then a good forged bottom end and around 9.1 compression like said above along with all the supporting mods and not to mention the drivetrain and chassis upgrades to go with all that to put that power down and not break anything. But from what you've said in this thread and your other one, then a good H/C/I setup will get you where you want.
