Default Thumpy turbo cam?

Okay, so this is an odd request. The Formula in my sig, is my wife's. In the somewhat near future, the tired N/A LS1 is getting pulled, and a turbo 5.3 setup will be in its place.

I have my wife sold on the power potential, but not on the sound. She loves the sound of a big cam, cut on a low LSA. The more it thumps, the more she likes it.

The problem is, low LSA cams, and big cams are not good for turbo setups.

Are there any cams out there that would do well with a turbo and still have a little thump?

LSA isnt everything as far as idle characteristics. Duration and the tune itself play a big part too. Martin Smallwood did my cam and I should have a start up video next week. It should hit pretty hard for a turbo cam. Playing with the tune also can net you more lope from a less aggressive cam

*Is willing to bet good money that said wife forgets all about that silly lope sound after she falls in love with the new "sound of her life" so to speak... that of a turbo coming to life and the sweet woosh of a blow off valve.*

I don't know about that. It took me a year to persuade her just to consider it. When she heard "turbo", and then told her it would have to have a BOV also, she was STRONGLY against it, claiming she didn't want to be a "ricer".

You got any videos of it?

Make sure you post up a vid when you get the startup.

I would love to hear/see videos of these in action. Not only how they idle, but how they perform under boost as well. Then I can have something to show my wife that it can still sound and perform decent at the same time. Cam specs would be great also.

Thanks guys.

Thank you for posting the vid. It sounds decent. I know this won't make her happy enough though, so I am hoping I can find something a little more rough and thumpy.

Here is how the car currently sounds. I know I probably won't be able to get a good turbo cam to sound as rough as the MS3, but I'd like to find something that is as rough as possible and still be a good cam for the turbo setup.

You can get it close. You do your own tuning??? That's all it will take to get it to sounds nasty. I wanted the same thing and i was pretty happy with it but the better the tune the more smooth it ran. Personally i think the new cam sounds too tame but its all in how it performs so figured i would make that trade off.

No, it will be professionally tuned. I'm not expecting any miracles here. I know it can't be as mean as she wants it and still be a good cam for the turbo setup. I'm just hoping to find something that sounds somewhat thumpy and still do well.

Just like Camaro9969 said just ask your tuner to play with the tune a bit. This is a buddies TU1 that sounds pretty mean.

That's definitely LOUD! But not "choppy" enough.

This is more along the lines of what I was thinking

http://m.youtube.com/results?q=cammed%20turbo&sm=3

This was his cam specs > 238/242 .609/.612 113+4 cam

Anyone know if it would do decent as a turbo cam? You can put something mean into a turbo car, but it doesn't mean its going to perform well.

Well, as bad *** as that 238/242 cam sounds, I just think its too big to make a decent turbo cam. I found the video randomly on YouTube, and it would seem he had the cam in the car when it was NA, and added the turbo later. And although it seems to drive well;

http://m.youtube.com/user/ssinister550

I think going that large probably has a lot of lag down low.

I'm thinking of staying in the low 232/234 .050 and around 600 lift on a 113 LSA may be able to keep me with some decent chop and still perform well.

I have been reccomended again to contact Brian Tooley Racing to get their opinion as they apparently have good spec'd cams that fit what I am looking for here.

In the mean time, if anyone has any other reccomendations with videos, I would love to hear them.

Blower cams like this one are totally different from turbo cams. My cam in my supercharged in my Z is HUGE, and it works well with my D1SC, but put it in a turbo car and it would lag like no other and have horrible driving characteristics. Bob at Brute Speed is a great guy to work with, but he specializes in supercharged application and blower and NA cams on his website.

I'll need to go elsewhere for this. I contacted Martin at Tick, and Brian Tooley to see what they had to say. So far Allen from BTR has got back with me saying if I went with a S475 that he could get me a cam that sounds like what I am looking for. But, even though I had considered an S375, I was steering towards a PT7675 due to the ginormous size of BW's housings and the lack of precious real estate I have under the hood.

Here is a little video its really rich as its on vp110 for storage and the carb is setup for ethonal.

have you considered going with a D1SC instead of a turbo? Seems like it would get you where you wanna go while getting that chop your looking for in a cam and you obviously have been down that road before, so is there some particular reason you wanna switch it up for her car?
