Default 408?

Well, after being one of the people screwed by Kentucky Turbo for well over 20k, I'm finally getting all my parts assembled to finish my car. I have a fully forged 408 with all the good stuff. But, the problem is, that everyone keeps telling me I should have built a 370 or similar sized motor due to skirt clearances. So, I guess the question is, should I sell the 408 and build a 370-375 or keep the 408. 2900lbs, built T56.

Yea run the 408. As long as its built right you should have no problems. Plus once you feel the torque of a 408 you won't go back.

I would stay with the 408 Art. You already have it. Put a monster turbo on it and let it eat.

A lot of people are stepping up to bigger turbos on the large cubic inch motors. With the right cam and hot size piping it can spool like a little turbo.

Keep the 408 and match the proper turbo to it and it will do whatever you want it to do.

A GT5088, GT5288 and a GT5588 are all great choices for a 408 c.i. LS motor.

As 72camaro said, the right cam can bring the turbo online quickly at a low RPM and have it hold power to redline without tapering off.

Hey Josh! It's been awhile bud. I picked up LS9 heads, Tooley springs, pushrods, LS3 intake, possibly working on the LS3 Victor intake and a 4150 TB. I still have that K member for u, I got another. Upper and lower contol arms, and I'm seeing Madman next week to start my cage and rebuilding the front.

Martin, I'll definitely be getting a cam from you within the next couple of weeks. I'll have my engine builder call you this week. As far as turbos go, my buddy talked me into a BW S480 with .96

Martin, I will be getting with you soon for a camshaft. I think thats the only thing thats left on my car. I think its a brutespeed blower cam and think that its not optimized to my setup. I will be getting with you soon for a custom grind to hopefully maximize my setup.

Nice Art, what all is he doing to it? I am going to be moving hopefully by the summer and have a bigger garage. I am going to fab a turbo kit for Sylvio's car and will have more room than my current setup.

Art, I think the s480 is kind of small for a 408. I think Martin will agree. It will leave a lot to be desired. A better match would be a gt 5594, or even the gt91 like what is on my car. The 80mm compressor wheel can't compare to an 88, or 91 and up. The 5594 has a 94 compressor that will move a lot of air through that motor.

He's cutting that Crap of a cage that was put in, doing a chromemoly 8 point and setting up the front end for the intercooler and radiator. Welding in some subframes and not tubbing it ...yet :-)

And i also was thinking a 408 wasn't a good motor for boost.I'm just a piston change to being boost ready

My 408 with gt 91 is a very good combo. Torque of a stroker motor out of boost and insane power in boost.

I would highly recommend purchasing the billet wheel S480 that Forced Induction offers if you stay with a S480 based turbo. The compressor map on a S480 IMO is not broad enough at lower pressure ratios(where your 408 will end up on the map) to move the airflow requirement your engine will demand efficiently.

We can attempt to offset the added airflow requirement with a smaller cam and cylinder head(intake runner and intake valve), but ultimately the easiest thing to do is utilize the right compressor wheel.

Give me a call or shoot me an email(would be best so I can send you a spec sheet) and if we can we'll plot out some numbers and see where you're at with your current combination.

Is there a compressor map available for your turbocharger?

Agreed 100%. The turbo's you mentioned are also much more efficient in moving higher amounts of airflow at lower pressure ratios. A larger c.i. motor will not generate the manifold pressure a smaller motor will.

I sent an email yesterday asking about the cams you have in the for sale section and are also on ebay. Would one of those work for me? 408" motor, ls3 headed worked over pretty good, gt 91 with a 94 turbine, 102 tb with aarons elbow and gmpp spidered intake, 4l80e with circle d 3600 and a 3.08 gear. I am not sure if there is a map available, the turbo is a t6 based gt 91 with 94 turbine and .96 ar housing all from forced inductions. My email is joshlucher@yahoo.com if you didnt get it.

I will look through my emails and see what I can find!

That said, I believe most of those cams will either be too large, or won't have the correct valve events needed for your application.
