Default 4L80E and LT1

Wut up erbody,

My car is an original 97 T/A WS6 with a T-56. Now my question is how many guys here have did a 4L80E swap? Im just generalizing and assuming that I will need a change in the PCM to accept a 4L80E, and also a loom that contains a input/output speed sensors. What else is needed? I know this question is suitable for the drive-train section but I thought I would just ask.

What are your swap experiences with the 4L80E? Pros/Cons?

Thanx for the input!

You will need to hammer a section of the floor in to clear the data connection.

Wire in a relay to invert a signal, and get a 80e cross member. Will also need a custom torque converter, along with a new yoke for the DS. Stock length will work fine.

Its not cheap.

But compared to having the 60e beefed up and lasting???

Beats me, if you listen to 60e builders the 80e swap costs you a few tenths and the 60e will last just as long no matter what the HP of engine.

80e builders say that a 60e will never live and a 80e only eats a little more HP.

Its a crap shoot.

We build trannys all day over here so thats not the issue. I get 80E complete cores for $100 tops. I know the converter would have to be custom but the best converter builder in the STL area only charges us $250 for billet stalled converter. We just never did a change over in a F-Body before and guys here have already experienced it before so I was just wanting to know what issues I will run into.

4L60E are just weak to me and from what we saw come through the shop. So I rather not keep building one ever other year when I could build something that will last a minimum of 4 years and take abuse at the same damn time. LOL

I've never ran either in a street car (only trucks), but the only thing that keeps me from thinking 60e's are pure crap is the small handful I've seen last in heavy B-bodies running 11s and faster. I've seen many more grenade before the going gets any faster than 12s.
I guess it all depends on who built it and with what parts.

Check my build thread, I have some pics of what you need to cut etc for the 80e to fit under an Fbod.

IDK about the wiring, PM slow67 on here for info, I just run a 80e segment swap on my OS.

Its most def on who builds it, I totally agree. I trust my father in law in the 80E build but my wallet is saying otherwise. I have more money than expected in this FI build . I rather be safe than sorry at this point. But im still contemplating the swap. I discovered that people are paying $14-1700 for a T56 and that would be my opportunity to be more consistent at the track. It would only cost me $800 in parts (Billet TC, all internals, Wire looms) for the 80E swap so im just trying to weigh my options at this point!

Junkyard 80e, HD2 shift kit and a quality torque converter, it should last a season or two behind mid 700hp I would guess.

Right. We just bought that for my father in law cuz he was taking out his M5 in his 97 8.1 Chevy 3500. He loves it too!

I was talking to PCM 4 Less and their cars with TH400 was losing 100rwhp but gaining like .3 in the 1/4 mile. So Im assuming a 80E would lose at least 75rwhp if I got a tight enough TC. Some people say I could get low 700rwhp, some say I would crack low 500rwhp. So if I could crack hi 600rwhp through a M6 then I would run as consistent as a 500rwhp as A4?

**** I dont know. Jus speculating. I not really a dyno queen either.

Auto will be more consistant and easier to launch.

Get a locking converter and the manual really loses its luster (drag racing wise)

I am guessing my car makes ~700fwhp off trap/weight so I really don't care about the "losses" my 80e gives me.

You won't lose anything more or less between Th400 or 80e IMO.

One gets you OD, one does not.

I did the 80e swap with my LT1 and absolutely love it. Running the stock tune with a couple of tweaks. It's easy and I don't feel I lost anything at the track from it. The 80e was so much easier to rebuild and a lot cheaper. It is so much more consistent and shifts faster too.

Funny thing is that my fiance chewed me out about putting a 80E in it. She wants me to keep the T56 in it cuz she wants to drive it thats such a turn on!

So I will keep the T56 til I tear it up plus Im still gonna build it still just so it wont take too much down time. Thanks a lot for the input!
