Default What turbo? Experts inside 4.8L

Well guys

I bought a 4.8 thinking it was a 5.3. Seems to be pretty common here

I have an 01 SS Camaro. 6 speed car.

Someone recommended I go with a s475 turbo. Someone else told me that the s475 through a 6 speed will be relatively laggy.

I want to run the 4.8 and eventually swap and build either a 5.3 or 6.0.

My biggest question right now is what turbo should I go with?

I have the huron speed single turbo ac kit T4

Also what wastegate to go with?

Thanks guy! I can always count on your guys

If you do go with an s400 series go with the smaller turbine (83x74 I think) then if you build a 6.0 and want to go to a larger borg you don't have to redo your hotside.

I will be running a billet S480 1.10 AR (92 turbine) on a built 5.3 with a 6spd. This was recommended by Jose at FI. Depending on your budget and application (street/race and power goals) an S475 will more than likely get the job done with a smaller turbine. Get liljohn to spec you a cam after you call Jose at FI and you will be set. Good luck with your build!

I dont think that you can run an S400 with the HS kit unless I'm mistaken. I actually sold my group purchase when they first came out because of this.

im not a 6 speed but my 475/87/1.10 works well on the street with my 302cuin 4.8.. and has been mid 9's at 148 with its first and only run at higher boost.. ran 10 oh at only 14 psi last time to the track.. Cam plays a key role i spool. I had a stock cam and it made a big difference changing to my tick cam..

The right can and converter and I believe the 87 turbine on the s475 would be plenty fun. If you are really wanting quicker spool go to the 83.

S475 with a T4 flange, 83mm turbine and 1.10 housing will work fine IMO.

I love how people are always quick to recommend a turbo without ever knowing what the car will be used for. Everyone on this site also seems to want to recommend an s400x to every single person out there no matter what there goals are. "Oh you have very little engine bay room and want your car as light as possible and a quick spool and only 5-600hp, well then you def should use an s480 with a t6 flange and add 50lbs to the front of your car"

Definitely need to know what the vehicle is going to be used for and what customer wants out of the set up and turbo. Being used on a 4.8l now with plans to change engine size down the road unfortunately we are going to sacrifice a little here or there to accommodate for one or the other, but we should be able to find something that will work well pending on the goals!

I really prefer the 7675 or 7875's over the base T4 83mm S475s as they package much nicer and weigh a lot less. Unless a customer NEEDS that larger 4" exit turbine housing, the 7675/7875's will perform just as well and package much nicer with a lot less stress on the materials of the system. For a 4.8l or a 5.3l, a 3" exit and 3" down pipe is going to be plenty for most!

Wow some awesome information here.

For me the car won't see the track too often. I enjoy running the car but it will be 99% on the street. I want a silly fun street car that will see occasional track time.

I don't have any weight reduction goals, if anything I added 50-60lbs in dynamat to quiet it down just a gas. I added component speakers and a small 10" sub. So I definitely don't have aspirations for breaking records.

Let's see what you experts recommend for a great weekend street car. My original goal was 650ish wheel horsepower. I want it to be enjoyable power too. Not a huge slow spool time from 5200-6800 and that's it. I'd like good quick spool through the power band. I know tires and a rear will be questionable on how enjoyable it is on the street.

What do you all think?
