I use a little 70W cigaratte lighter one I got
at AutoZone and it works fine (only fits in the
lower lighter though, too much of a pecker to
fit by the shifter).

No ground loop problems with any of these? Have you guys heard of anyone having a problem with ground loop killing their a-tap cable?

My personal preference (after having used inverters) is a 12V laptop car adapter (or some such verbiage - google for it). The one for my Toshiba cost ~$40, cheaper than buying a battery to replace the toasted one and will run the laptop much longer They are more efficient than an inverter, but that probably isn't a big deal in this application.

Thanks for all the replies. That's what makes this forum so great. You ask a question and several people take the time to answer it.

I killed my Atap cable with my walmart inverter. I emailed the Atap tech support and below is the email I got back from them. I haven't had the ***** to try and run the inverter again while connected up to my Atap cable.

Scott

Sometimes when people charge there laptops from a cigar lighter they will have different ground potential than the vehicle. When that happens there is to much voltage going through the scanner. In order to get it repaired you will need to talk to Jane at 815-433-5100 ext 218.

Scott, do you remember the brand name of that invertor? I bought one from Best Buy and have used it a couple times and it seems to work fine but you know how that goes. It works fine for a while then out of the blue "pop".

I was wondering the same thing. I drove up to mamoth this winter (7 hour drive) and hooked up my Laptop and FM transmitter to a Coleman 400W inverter when the laptop's battery died. (Yes, I know...poor man's IPOD). Wow there was so much noise coming through the audio system. I have been wondering if it was possible to do the same for programming, but also wondered if anything could happen to either the ECU or the laptpop. :S
