Default Cam...Should i go large???

been reading up on different cams, but i just cant decide what to do. im either gonna get a moderate cam like the tsp 224 112lsa or a big TSP 231/237 or maybe even a g5x2. I plan to supercharge the car sometime in the near future, and wanted to wait til then to upgrade the rear unless it breaks, so i figured the 224 would be good for now and if i wanted i could also throw the bigger cam in later if i choose to not go FI. i have the stock 3.42s and know the bigger cams require steeper gears. i am keeping heads stock. what do you guys think?

I just ordered a G5X3 on a 114 LSA. It's a great street cam with tons of power cam only. I'd suggest it on a 112 for your T56, but you're going to need a lot more boltons and suspension work to get the most out of this monster.

I'm quite sure I'm going with the 224 with stock heads for a while, I just love the power increase all across the power band, some of the others mentioned are more 3500 to 6800 increase, but man, my car never goes above 6K...

I also want to supercharge someday, so when I was inquiring about buying the proper cam for a charger now instead of doing it twice, I was told not that it wasn't a good idea.

Well, if you want to blow it in the future then that's a whole different story. If you don't mind me asking, why are you fixed on a supercharger. I'm mean, I'm going to be cutting high tens cam only? I'd say spend the $5000 elsewhere? Your car though.

After seeing how much effort it takes to get the car to run right on a blower (got a local board member here with one and it is definitely high maintenance), I would stick to N/A or maybe go bottle if you want some forced induction in the future.

That said, I'd go with something you're going to be comfortable with... once you change the valve springs (and I would go with the Patriot duals so you can go with a bigger cam in the future without changing springs) you're good to go with a second cam if you don't like your first selection.

I chose the TSP 231/237 because I like the big lope I've heard with that cam, plus with it's less aggressive ramp rates it's easier on the valve springs than more aggressive cams with similar profiles. However, it sounds like you would like to try the 224 cam, so I say go with your gut and get that cam if that's what you've been wanting... if you don't like it and want more, cams are easily swapped once you've done it once.

I'd have to say the g5x3 is hardly a street cam, 224 is more street friendly IMHO. But what do I know?
All I know is, big cams like this need to rev pretty high to get the most out of them, if you don't mind revving to 6800 on your daily driver and replacing springs often, then go for it, otherwise stay milder.

Sounds like you don't want to drive it real hard (if you're rarely seeing over 6k). I'd go with v8maro on this one, and go for the milder cam. You'll be able to take much more advantage of it. And remember, depending on several factors, bigger doesn't always mean better. A 224 cam matched with a good set of heads will put down some great numbers. Hell take a look at (arg, can't find the post) what AFR did with a 224 cam.

yeah i definately want to supercharge it, i love the sound of a blower i cant help it, plus not a lot of people go supercharged, and im not looking to go big at all, im planning on like 5-7psi boost and spending the rest of my money on the rest of the setup. So basically i was thinking about doing the 224 cam, runing 7psi boost, 8in rear, full suspension, clutch etc. Shoot that in it self will probably take me years. then after im done with that setup ill go big with a 408 or something and convert it into a track/weekend car. i dont know, im sure i could probably get away with getting a bigger cam and will get more power, but it moves the power band up high and i loose my lowend which i love. am i crazy?

Well you won't actually lose low end with a bigger cam... a bigger cam will still make just as much if not a little more power in the low rpms than what you're used to stock. It will give up a little to a milder midrange cam down low, but won't give anything up to the stock setup for sure.

I don't see another cam in your sig... I'm saying that a bigger cam won't lose any low end compared to the stock cam. So if you don't have am aftermarket midrange cam now, even if you go with one of the 'big' cams, you won't feel any sense of lost HP in the lower rpms.

I went from the 224/228 to a G5X3 and it's a night and day difference, MUCH more power down low, much more power up high, etc. Just a plain kick *** cam. I love it. I would never put a smaller cam in the car. This is my daily driver and I am making as much HP as most heads and cam 224 cars, minus the big headed AFR's etc, they are just nuts

You may want to give some consideration to the TSP 225 and 228 cams.

I thought about the TSP 228 cam for a while... it's a solid cam from what I've seen posted here and is a nice in-between type cam. Not small, but not too big either.
