Exclamation Rocker Arm Help

OK, here's the deal. I own a '98 Z with S2 heads and the 224/224 112 lsa cam. To my knowledge the heads haven't been milled at all. I have yella terra rockers and and 7.4 pushrods. I am having some real loud valve train noise coming from the driver side. It gets louder in the upper rpm ranges and varies sometimes at idle. Some have told me maybe bad valve adjustment or a lazy valve. I have heard that it is a 1-1,000,000 chance that the valve goes bad on the Ls1. How true is that? Well, here is what I have done so far. I have taken the driver side valve cover off and taken all the rocker arms and pushrods off of the head. Now my problem is this. I didn't see which one was a TDC before removing them all. How will I go about re-assembling them with proper valve lash after my mess up? Any help on this would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
BJ

Stock rockers you could just bolt them down to 22ft lbs with stock lifters you should not have to check preload. Did you check the rockers bearings maybe one is coming apart and making noise? I have also seen some bad lifters make noise.

Listen to Nate, I had a similar problem with Harland Sharps and he knew exactly what to do. Thanks, Nate!

The 5.3 Patriot heads. They arent shaved at all to my knowledge. The tapping comes and goes but is there most of the time. Sometimes louder than others but it is there.

The moderator on LS2.com is telling me that TDC shouldn't be and issue in this case and that I should just bolt the rockers back on as normal using the 22 ftlbs. of Tq. Is this correct?

BJ, you can just install the rockers and torque. TDC dosen't matter on these cars. After you torque them, rotate the motor 180 degrees and torque again. It sounds like warren has a lifter that is loosing prime. This would explain the sound coming and going. I thought ya'll were going to replace them anyway?

One of my harland sharps were touching the inside of my drivers side valve cover. Did you remove the cover and look for any wear spots?

Beast96Z,
Well we are trying to do every thing we can before going that deep into the engine. Not scared to do that but wouldn't want to go that far and find out it was something on top.

I'm hearing alot of talk about this oil pump o-ring that may cause noisy lifters and all. Any thoughts on this?

That's usaully at idle. It can be pretty noisy. If the o-ring was badly pinched, then it could possibly be loud under load, but I would think he would notice some low oil pressure if it was that bad. Just for ***** and giggles, I'd get a light and look through the pushrod holes to see if you can see any visible damage to the top of the lifter. When is it making these noises again? Idle, under load, both? When is it the worst and how was the oil pressure?

It is making the noises both at idle and throttle. It varies on how loud it is but is always there. The oil pressure since the H/C install is lower than what it use to be. Maybe 20 at idle and 40-50 at WOT. I was thinking that it would be higher than that. He does have a ported LS6 pump too. I really don't know where to go after we put it back together and torque everything right. What's next?

when my o-ring was smashed/pinched i would get close to 0 oil pressure, while it was fine at more throttle. i'd lean toward the theory on o-ring being out of place.
