Another new best! Go MMS and TCI
Another week of driving the car to and from work with no problems to report! I was working down in Diamond Bar today so I threw the slicks in the car this morning and headed by Irwindale raceway for a couple passes after work. No changes to the car since last time out (full street trim, ps, air filter, all seats, etc. raceweight of 3340#).
The track was hooking a little better than last Thursday and I got a good idea of what this combo can do:
6.72@101.10 1.46 60'
How about an unofficial 10.5?? Not bad for a daily driven full street car. This is with a mild MMS 396 "all bore" and TCI 4000 stall.
A few people have emailed me about the stall so here is the info. It's part number
TCI 242932 and you can get it for under $500 right from Jegs. It's flashing
to around 3900rpm with an ext of 5300, and it feels really nice around town. I'd suggest it to guys looking for a mid 11 heads/cam stall, or an aggressive heads/cam/juice car. Guys looking for low 11 heads/cam car probably want the same stall only 500rpm looser.
One more thing for all you heads/cam/huge stall guys out there. Once you go real torque you'll never go back. I love driving around this MMS 396.

Sounds good, Terry. Looks like that TCI converter is working out well for you. Just more proof that you don't have to have a Yank/Vig to go fast... I'm not knocking either one, but no way I'd trade my JW converter.

Nice times Terry! Now you fully understand why it never bothered me when you would compare your 346ci times with my bigger motor. The BIG motors are MUCH more drivable for the same performance level, its the best of both worlds.

Re: Another new best! Go MMS and TCI
There is a lot more in the car. Right now I'm running 120# heavier than I could be with a more restrictive exhaust. I love this TCI stall but I could also probably stand to go up another 500rpm in stall speed. Taking the weight out and upping the stall a bit would get me in to the 6.62 1/8th range I bet (maybe a 10.4?).
For now I might just leave the car as is and swap out my MMS 229v2.1 cam for a new larger MMS hydrolic cam. I'd love to drive to the track in street trim and run 10.4..

I was thinking the same exact thing. It is however a bad *** setup, but I wouldn't call it mild. Just because it runs on pump gas doesn't mean its mild. BTW, I'm assuming that if you drive it to the track and back it runs on pump gas.

Re: Another new best! Go MMS and TCI
How do you consider it not mild? It idles smooth with a 229/114ls camshaft (small for the motor size), regular MMS stage 3 LS6 heads, unported intake, runs on pump gas, stock crank, stock rockers, etc.
A wild motor would be 13.5:1 CR, huge solid cam, shaft rockers, race gas only, poor idle, etc.
The only "crazy" thing about this motor is the offset grind on the crank. I don't think the extra 8 cubes added anything but bragging rights. 396 rolls off the tongue so smoothly!

Re: Another new best! Go MMS and TCI
The main thing I'm worried about is weather you'll be ready to get your @$$ handed to you by a 23* headed 396 next season.
Oh, and obligatory niceties...
Congrats!
