Default Very, very frustrated..why am I so slow??

My previous best was 12.12@115mph. This was in mid 80s weather, with close to 100% relative humidity @ cecil. I ran this same number a number of times, with a best 60' of 1.72 on 16" ET streets (26x10.5x16) mounted on firebird rims. Street tires up front. Dissapointing for a H/C car with a 12 bolt (full weight) and good clutch, but I figured it would run a lot better in cooler weather.

Well yesterday, with temp around 32-34 degrees (the ticket said 96% humidity, but im not sure that was right), the best I could muster was a 12.02@115. I ran 8 times, with four of the runs in the 12.0x range, one trap time of 116. and 60's ranging from 1.65 to 1.72 on the good runs.

Changes from last time:
-new pro 5.0 shifter,
-entire set of new tires and 15" bogart rims (ET sportsmans on front, et streets on back),
-some dyno tuning (car does 400rwhp/387rwtq)
-heavier oil from 5w30 to 10w30 mobil-1, in hopes of burning less oil.

Car has a moser 4.11 33 spline 12 bolt, ram vds clutch, offroad pipes and cutout. Full mods on website: www.erikz.org

Not in my worst nightmare did I think the car would still not break into the 11s. In my mind it was just how far into the 11s I would go. I dont understand, anyone with insight or suggestions, please help

do you have a shift light? i found that on motor runs i was twisting the motor too much for my setup and the power was falling off some. with a new setup, it takes time to get the feel for it. my car made 380 n/a at the wheels in a 3500 lb car with me in it, that should be enough to get me in the 11's too, but all i could manage was a 12.24 that night.

just work with it, it doesnt happen overnight.

Let someone who can REALLY row the car ring it out for u.Not taking anything away from u but if u cant drive then there's big ET left on the table..

Well I do have a shift light, but it lags as bad as my tach. Yes it is hooked directly to the PCM output. Im not sure why, but I am afraid that it is most likely something to do with my car and not the shift light, so I dont know if changing it will help.

I usually shift fairly close to the rev limiter @7000rpm, that might be too late, because the power peaks at 6150 and drops off at 6500 somewhat. I have ATAPed the car when I run, and the shifts usually are 6600 -6900 range. I did hit the rev limiter twice, and shortshifted the 2-3 bad on my very first run.

I dont think my shifting is bad enough to cost me 2-4mph, and half a second ET. There has to be something else I think.

Any other suggestions?

I think you are answering your own question, car makes power 6150rpm and you are shifting it at almost 7000rpm this combo sounds like it should shifted around 6200/6300 so that when you shift it will be in its power range not above I hope this helps.

This is a link to my dynos:
http://www24.brinkster.com/ezerner/b1camdyno.htm

You might have to copy and paste to your browser. In any case, you can see that the car's power is pretty flat 6150 on to about 6500, where it starts to drop. I shift later because the next shift then starts higher in the power band. But ok, maybe I should shift sooner...ill give that a shot for next time.

With your RWHP, vehicle weight, gear clutch and a decent short times you should be high 11.50s- low 11.70's@118-120mph easily.

I think with practice you'll get the times down.

DEFINITELY put a shiftlight in the car if you haven't already. I notice a HUGE difference between the factory tach and actual rpm. (I am thinking a shiftlight with 6500-6600 pill and 7000rpm redline would work wonders for your times)

The only missing component appears to be the driving.

With the shiftlight and a little more practice and 11.5's-11.7's will be yours at full weight.

Good luck,
Chris

Erik, are you coming to Cecil on 11/16? There is a guy that is coming that I would like to drive your car. He took another one of my customers cars that is in a similar situation as you and knocked 0.5 off of the et and added 3 mph just by driving skill. Rowing a 6 speed is not as easy as you think and makes a huge difference in performance at the track. You can follow me down if you like.

FWIW, I ran 11.88 @ 119 (6 speed) with a little less power than you are making. At that time I was at 392 rwhp. That was on my 10 bolt with 4.10's, ET streets out back, WS6 wheels up front, crappy McLeod clutch.

try shifting at 6400-6600 and watch the times fall

Or try the MOOSE mod Anyone who can get a 11.0x out of a H/C M6 car gets major props from me

The Moose mod! hehehhe

I still think a 6500-6600 rpm shift point is ideal for your setup if power is flat across from 6100-6600rpm.

Ideally you want to run first out a little longer (Say to 6800rpm) to allow for the mechanical gearing advantage of first gear.

Second to third you should shift just a hair after the shiftlight at 6600rpm and on the 3-4 shift try to anticipate the shiftlight coming on to put you back just above peak RWTQ. (It takes practice but you can get it so that you are pretty much depressing the clutch when the light comes on )

Driving a six speed is a definitely something you have to practice. I have about 1000 1/4 mile passes in a six speed since my first f-bod in 95.
Good luck,
Chris

What worries me most is the trap times. 116 is my best, there is no way it should be that low

Erik,

I was gonna throw my hat in w/ driving, but you seem to have it covered now. I can see your concern about mph, even cars that don't et well are capable of good mph. I think you're more than likely shifting too high. I might be able to help out w/ the shift light problem when I'm down there. I'll try to remember my splices

Matt
