New timing chain question

New timing chain question I'm getting ready to do a cam swap and I've heard lots of people suggesting I should swap the timing set. I have 52k on the motor. Is there a better single set out there? I think I've heard Rollmaster makes one. Who sells heavy duty single sets that aren't too expensive? I don't think I really need a double roller set. I'm probably just going with a MTI B1 cam. Thanks for any advice or input.

Re: New timing chain question Search for rollmaster. They can deliver a set for about 70$.
GM Performance sells a high dollar Renold chain, it is heavier than the stock one. Still have to order the gears separate.
If you are cheap, order a stock one from a dealer that sells at near cost. If you cannot find one, PM.
I wanted a single as I did not want to mess with shims or milling the harmonic balancer. No point in doing so if you are not going crazy on the valvetrain or shift points.

Re: New timing chain question Can I just change out the chain with a new stock one or do I need to replace the gears as well? I have a cousin who works in parts at a Chevy dealership that I can get stock parts from.

Re: New timing chain question Just a heads up...
If you replace the crank timing gear and/or chain, the oil pump needs to be removed first in order to access these. I tried every kind of crank puller I could find to remove the crank timing gear. Finally gave up and just replaced the cam timing gear and chain. You really need the Kent-Moore gear puller specific for the LS1 to get that gear off.

Re: New timing chain question Don't think you need any special tool to put it back on, but you sure do to take it off.
The problem is that there is not enough space between the back of the gear and the block to get the regular (as in thick) gear pullers "legs" between. The Kent-Moore has very wide, but thin legs.

Re: New timing chain question I used a OEM #27078 puller, same one used to pull the balancer. It was harder using the rubber mallet and the old gear to get it the new one on. I would have rather had a installer tool.
That aside it took 20 minutes, to remove it, dig the new one out and knock it on.
