Default watch out for those 300zxTT's

My buddy has a 90 300zx TT...Spent a total of like $400 on it so far. boost jets, off road pipes (no mufflers), and an intake...he has the chip but it isnt in now

He went 13.3 @ 106 with a 2.1 60ft with just the intake/chip...

So we go out and mess around after installing the test pipes...Ran him from like a 40ish roll and he put like 2 cars on me -- not that my car is a roll racing monster but I was still suprised (I go 12's @ 108ish on motor)...He should definently run 12's @ 108-110ish...it pulls REAL hard on the top end for being an old *** car with 130k miles and only $400 into it.

My cousin has one of those. Putting down 550 RWHP. The thing is sick, but here lies the problem I have with it: One, it's a Nissan. Two, he's gone through a block, 2 cranks, 3 sets of pistons, and a stack of other parts. The import stuff can put down some mean numbers, but the **** breaks. The only one I have respect for is the Toyota Supra. They make tons of power on easy mods, look pretty cool, and are rear-wheel drive.

RWD - Supra, RX-7, 300ZX. All of these cars came with two turbochargers after 1994 or so. All of them "look ok" but sound like crap IMHO. Don't get me wrong though, they can be pretty nasty in the hands of a good tuner, but that holds true for any American car as well.

I personally think the Supra is over-rated and a well-built 3000GT VR-4 is a scarier, more intimidating street car. But that's not meant to start a flame war or anything, merely an expression of an opinion.

The point: NOTFAST is right. They haul and older models can be had for pretty cheap. I'd put these on par with 5.0 Mustangs on the "potentially capable adversary" chart.

I owned a 1990 300ZXTT from 1998 to 2002. I was not impressed to say the least. I had HKS CAI, chip and exhaust w/gutted cats. Got beat by a plethora of LT1 F-bodies and 5.0 Stangs. Ended up selling it to a kid in Florida and bought my Vette. Car handled better than any car I have ever driven, but just did not have alot of power IMHO. Not alot of potential either when compared to Supras and VR-4s.

Just my $0.02

I disagree that they are on par with the 5.0 in potential. I love em, but watch your buddy after he starts seriously modding the thing. If he doesn't shed parts like mad, I will be quite surprised.

I also disagree that a VR-4 (the 3000GT version) is intimidating. There might be a handful out there that are built well, but they are quite unimpressive machines in general.

A bowtie motor in a Nissan, eh? That must've been a lot of work!

It seems as if you have these two cars backwards. The Supra's stock block can handle 1000 hp. For very little money the Supra can put down 700 rwhp. The 3000GT VR-4 is a heavy tank with a weak drive train. They don't have the potential that the Supra has either.

I mean, on my local board somebody put a picture up of an 1100hp or so 300ZX with the turbo sticking through the hood. I'm not saying you can't build them, but it ain't an easy trip, so to speak.

When you think about it though...

It takes a big single turbo to propell that car into the 11's.

Cam only guys do it with a LS1.

So at the end of the day, the 300ZX is a dyno queen.

Show me a 700 rwhp for "very little" money.

I always thought that above 400rwhp, it gets expensive FAST to mod supras.

I shouldn't have said "very little". My point was that you can make a (nice)700 hp car for around $7K-8K. It is hard to make any car have 700 hp and remain relatively reliable.
