Default First Dyno Run, Very Pleased! 224 Cam & Headers (w/ & w/o cutout!)

Just did my first dyno run today on my 2001 Z28 6 speed. I saved some money and did the cam install and header install myself over the past month. I'm very pleased with the results!

TSP 224R (Comp XER) cam: 224/.581/112 lsa, no advance ground in, installed dot to dot.

Stainless Works Headers with Catted Y Pipe; Wonderful quality headers that make OUTSTANDING Power!

Street Pro Cutout, another great product

SLP Lid

160 Thermostat (helps in Arizona!)

STOCK Throttle Body
STOCK Pulley
STOCK Inlet with raised airbox (No free ram air)

SAE corrected: 367 rwtq, 381 rwhp

Made max power from 6000 to 6500 (didn't drop off, rev limiter at 6650)
Very flat torque curve, over 300 ft lb from 2500 to 6500

Cutout closed killed almost 25 hp (stock exhaust)

The RED (Middle) line is cutout open, prior to tune: 357.7 rwtq, 368.4 rwhp
The BLUE (top) is cutout open, after tune: 366.87 rwtq, 381.32 rwhp
The Green (bottom) is cutout closed, after tune: 353.66 rwtq, 354.81 rwhp

This is a good comparison of how the stock exhaust kills power, lost over 25 hp with cutout closed

Yes, I was very pleased with the numbers. I was afraid that the lack of ported TB and underdrive pulley would hurt me, but it appears that it didn't. And yes, I was appalled at how bad the factory exhaust is. Not sure if I want to get a Cat back or just use the electric cutout more. The nice thing about the factory exhaust is on long trips there is absolutely no drone.

If you like the sound now then leave it as is and just open her up when you feel like it. You will probably pick up 15HP with a Catback If not more but it will definitley be a lot louder with that cam

Riddler,
Thanks, I'm such an old man, I think I'll stick with the factory exhaust. Problem with the electric cutout is I use it way too often, I'm going to get a ticket! I need to just open it up at the drag strip or for an autocross.

Thanks,
Glenn

Glenn -

Good to see some respectable numbers with those StainlessWorks headers you & I discussed a li'l while back!

The cam that you installed is very similar to the one I am going to be purchasing - the TSP 224/224 .581 114LSA (XER Lobes) is what will be going into mine when I swap the heads.

Hmmm... Glenn, I saw the other thread regarding your doubts of the effectiveness of the ASP Pulley & a ported/epoxied TB. For your comparison's sake, here's my car -

'02 Firehawk
M6, '02 LS6-cam, stock heads, StainlessWorks LT Headers + Catted Y-pipe, stock SLP dual/dual exhaust, SLP/Donaldson OEM lid, 180 stat, Ported/Epoxied TB (homebrew), and ASP Crank Pulley. My peak #'s were 378rwhp / 367 rwtq - thru the stock catback. Of course, I am certain that your area under the curves was far better (darn no low-end tq with the LS6-cam), but our peak numbers were basically the same. From some of my research, the TSP 224R cam is worth 15-20 hp over the LS6 cam, so just as a strawman comparison that's what the TB + pulley has given my car to roughly be equivalent to yours...

In other words... Go for the TB + Pulley! If you do just a crank pulley, your A/C won't suffer a bit, even in the AZ heat...

Yea, you are probably correct. I just don't want to sacrifice any driveability and I've heard some people have idle problems with the TB and some have false knock with the pulley. But, after reading all the responses, I think I would add at least 10 hp with the pulley and TB.

Thanks for all of your help, really like the headers!

good numbers glen

whats really funny tho is that your graph is sideways. I just purchased this great lcd monitor that i would recommend to anyone that is a gamer or spends a lot of time on his PC. Anyways it rotates in 90 degree angles and your graph looks great!

For what it is worth I don't have any knock with my ASP pulley and I didn't lose the driveability with the ported tb.

Thanks for the input. Sounds like I can pick up a pulley for $225, a TB for around $120, and for a total of $350 pick up at least 10 hp. Well, I wish I would have done it before the tune.
