Question Oil Consumption: It might be bad

Well, I picked up my 99 SS a few days ago. The owner said it burned about a 1/2 quart of oil in about 1,200 miles. I was told he had just filled it with mobil 1 10-30.

I've put about 130 miles on it since, and when I checked the stick, it was 1 qt low!

I haven't seen a speck of smoke come out of it. I guess I haven't really witnessed the oil consumption myself just yet either, but if it's this bad...

I've been reading up, and I guess people are saying the ls6 PCV mod, (I'd go catch can myself) and a Metco breather can help this somewhat. I did a quick search on the Metco breather, but I couldn't find a LS1 application.

Do these two modifications really seem to help that much? Does anyone have any input, or a link for the LS1 Metco breather?

Thanks!

n/m it looks like Fasttoys has the breather.

Does this, and the catch can really help out on oil consumption?

a catch can won't actually stop you from losing oil, it will just stop it from getting going into your intake. a full quart in 130 miles sounds like a lot more than the average pcv problem though.... good luck

Yeah, I can't say for sure just yet. I'll be paying close attention to the oil level in the meantime.

There was a GM tech bulletin (so I've been told) that says it's okay for the LS1 to burn about one qt. per oil change.

Also, I've read somewhere that the LS1 should run a 5w-30 becase the clearance tolerance dosen't allow for the heavier oils.

I know this dosen't help much now...
