Default cartek heads give me 37 rwhp on my B1 setup

i just bought a set of used cartek stage II heads (thanx phil!). they are an older design, but not too old since they are still 241's. no other mods since my last dyno. i gained 37 HP and 18 TQ at the peaks.

they used conventional 10-40 oil. It was really hot in the shop and the garage door was shut to keep the noise to a minimum (damn neighbors). i was sweating just standing there. i think the engine temp was 190. They told me to redyno with more miles on it and when temps are more in my favor.

Cartek tuned my car with me right there, and I was very pleased. Even though i don't run with a cartek cam, I know Julio did his magic, performed to his best ability and gave me the best and safest tune possible. Roy did a sweet job on the install and my motor was cleaner when i got it back than when i left it there (somebody wants cookies ). Thanks Dave and Rich for letting me bother you constantly while my car was there Marc, thanx for the lift home (again)!

Love your car. Damn hardtop formula people. I think I'd be fairly happy with those numbers. Your sig says 384/365. Funny, I did 383/365. I just bought a ls6 intake today. Do you have one on yours yet? Next is a ported Janztner TB. You could probably stand a little more cam now, what are you thinking?

thanx dude. i got 384 before the 12 bolt went in. and that was like 1 or 2 years ago, and the motor isn't as tight as it used to be. my last dyno was in june and thats when i got the 373 hp. that was with all bolt ons including ls6 intake. i'm not thinking of doing any more power mods. i barely drag race anymore, autocrossing and road racing are more my style. i'm going to lighten her up over the next year.

Is it my imagination, or is there midrange power to be made with those heads? Its just kind of odd that there is no difference until 4250 rpms, where there is a hair of a dip, and then it just takes off. Good pulls though!

user, under 4300, my mild cam doesn't need any more air than the stockers provided. but apparently, over that, they can use the add'l air that the ported heads provide.

hmm, you sure you have a B1 , you dont hit 350rwtq until 4k rpm. i've never seen an old B1/T1 need that much rpm to hit its 350tq mark.

JRP, i'm pretty sure its a B1 cam. i bought it used 3 years ago. the stamp on the end confirmed it was a B1. it used to hit 350 tq earlier, but that was 2 years ago, when the motor was fresher. the leakdown results i posted are probably the reason why it takes a little more RPM to hit 350. i'm not concerned. here's my old dyno with stock rear with 4.10 gears and cats:

update:
I redyno'd to check the tuning since we tuned in hot weather. Other changes were a switch to Royal Purple synthetic oil 10w-30 (from normal dino oil 10w-30), added the bullet muffler to the I pipe to kill rasp, and of course the outside temp was much cooler (72 degrees for this pull as per atap). I gained 6 hp and 8 tq from the last dyno.

i feel much better about these numbers because i thought my tq before was a little low. now me much happier total gains from the heads were 43 hp and 27 tq!

after looking at my atap from the this dyno pull, max timing was only 24.5. i want to ask cartek on monday if that is normal or not. before they installed the heads and retuned, it used to make 27.5. so i think 24.5 is low, right? normal? at tq peak, max timing was 19.

when i had my tune done at cartek they basically said the ls1 is a very efficient motor and didnt need as much timing, what they ended up doing was pulling alot of timing in my main timing table as well as pulling alot of fuel, since pulling timing generally fattens up the mixture i guess thats why they pulled fuel...not sure if it made more power but thats what they did not sure what that'll end up meaning for you.

Most people think u need high timing in an LS1.
Well u would **** if u new where mine is set,the comb chamber is very efficient on our engines and IMO u dont need more than 28 degree's on most LS1 setups.

I'm running under 28 total....

Also u really can say u picked up this or that,It was retuned so that accounts for hp/tq too.

So it picked up 37RW from the heads and 6RW from tuning?
Pretty good pickup for 2yr old heads bro.

JS, i'm very happy from the gains. but it was like:
-my last cam only dyno and tuning session was 373 hp.
-install heads over the summer and tune = 410.
-redyno (just 2 pulls, no change in tune) in cooler weather and add synth oil = 416.
416 - 373 = 43 hp increase from older CARTEK heads + tuning.
And torque went from 360 to 387; gain of 27 tq.
i never dyno'd with the heads with no tuning; that would be pointless because the a/f would be all messed up.
