Default TR224/114/112 tuning question

After doing extensive research with the help of the wonderful people of this site, I've got my lists of mods narrowed down pretty much. Still deciding between the TR224/224 114 lsa .563/.563 or the TR224/224 112lsa .563/.563. Anyhow, my question is this - I was looking at handheld tuners, and ran across the Crane Powermax tuner that has preprogrammed setting for bigger cams. The #3 setting on the tuner claims to be proper programming for a camshaft of 224/224 114lsa .551/.551. The cams I'm looking at are in this range, with the 224/14 being closer. Would this be an effective tuning method? Would it work just as well with the 224/12? I am basically a parts changer, and not a diag tech or tuner, so I am looking for some opinions. I will also being doing the usual mods along with - long tubes, ls6 intake, valve springs, cat back, 12 bolt - If that info is needed.

My opinion is that you just have to bite the bullet, get the scanning and tuning software, tune it yourself, or have someone tune it for you. There are simply too many variables for a canned tune to take into consideration. Heck, you could use the money from the handheld, and apply it toward a correct tune. JMHO.

If you really want to go the canned tune route then I would buy the Vinci cam and Vinci programmer (which are both made by Crane to Vinci's params). Then the tune is actually gear specifically for that cam. That WON'T be quite as good as a custom tune since each car varies some, but it will put you right in the ballpark.

Get HP Tuners and start reading and studying threads. There are some really knowledgable people on this site that are willing to help. That's what I am doing. In the long run you'll be better off. Just my opinion.

Yeah, i agree. Get hptuners and go with the 112 lsa. You'll have better midrange and a nice lopey idle!

Thanks for the input guys, like I said before, I'm just a parts changer and I lot of stuff I have read on other threads is over my head. I'll probably go with the custom tune. Just thought the Crane tuner might be an easy way out, but still deciding between the 112 or 114.

Yeah - I'm really leaning towards the 112. Nice lopey idle , added midrange power, great reviews all around. But I'm moving back to Chicago in about a year, and I'm a little concerned about the sniffer test. Also, it seems in some of the threads I've read that more people had tuning issues with the 112. How's yours for emissions? Did you have any tuning concerns?

I saw you were from Las Vegas, so I assumed there was no sniffer test to worry about. I'm in Massachusetts, and they switched to OBDII code scanning this year, so I wasn't worried about passing the sniffer when I selected my cam. You might be better off with the 114 then.

I tuned my car yesterday and it was pretty easy. My LTFTS were still slightly negative with the new cam, so I didn't have to mess with that; I made a tiny adjustment to the pe vs rpm table. The only major tuning the new cam needed was IDLE. I raised the idle, 850-875A/C, adjusted the Main VE 400, 800, and 1200rpms (x70%, x80%, and x90%). I had added a couple of degrees of timing up to 1000rpms in the hi-octane table, but went back to the stock setting because it idled better without the extra timing. My tuning issues were so easy because I had done a lot of tuning before the new cam was installed. I was surprised that the new cam hadn't altered my fueling very much.

when you take your car to get a tune at a performance shop....what software do they use? hptuners? What is the best way to learn how to tune? I have a laptop with autotap and still am not very good with that.

I'm thinking the 114 is the way to go due to emissions also. I just have this feeling that I'll go through the trouble of the cam swap, like it for a week, and have regrets about not doing the 112. Especially after hearing all the 112 owners say how much they like thier setups. I'm also 99% certain I will be going with the custom tune, so maybe if the tune is where it needs to be I may be able to sneak by the sniffer. I'm also planning on the Dynatech Supermaxx Lts with cats pre-installed in the Y-pipe, and Hooker cat-back, so at least I'll have cats for the test.

I don't know much about emissions, but maybe some others can chime in if you could pass with the 112. If you could get by with it, I would do it. You won't have any drivability problems with a tuned 224 cam.

Exactly, my car with the 224 112 is just as "drivable" as it was with the stock cam. The only thing that could have made it undesirable was idle, which was easily cured with tuning, and of course NoGo. I went through the mental 112/114 debate, and after installing the 112, I know I would be very disappointed if I had gone with the 114. Heck, I'm thinking about what I can do next to make my ride even nastier. Supercharger? Twin turbos? Nitrous? Motherf******!!!!

NO!! - Don't say that right now. My mental debate is 12 = 48% 14 = 52%, but your coments may have dropped me back to 50/50. I can't believe I'm being so **** over 2 cam choices that are both absolute winners! But thanks for the input - I'm sure well talk in the future about those nastier mods you mentioned. Buy the way - I enjoyed your thread on your cam install - Congrats Bro.

I'm not the least bit concerned about driveablity issues after reading so many other threads from people with these cams. It just sucks that I'm in an OBD2 state that I know I can sneak a 112 through, and moving to a different state with a damn sniffer that I'm not sure a 112 will go through. Going with the pro tune for sure though. Thanks

Thumbs up

Thanks Vegasman, 112, just a thought, 112, I don't know if Illinois, 112, is anything like Mass, 112, but the place I go for my inspection, 112, the gararge owner has a ZO6, 112, and the mechanics, 112, are total motorheads, 112, so basically I've always gotten a free pass, 112, so my point is, 112, you could figure-out a way to make a 112 legal. I say get the 112 and work on improving your odds of being legal later, 112. Tuning, pocket greasing, cool mechanics, whatever it takes, 112.

Good luck!!!

This is just an un-educated guess, but I'm thinking your trying to tell me the 112 is the way to go. Like I said, just a guess. My girl always said I was never good at reading between the lines!

Not really man, you can't go wrong either way. You have to live with your car, and only you can decide. If it wasn't for emissions, your decision would be a simple one.

Keep everyone posted!

also the CAM #3 gets you in the ball park. then you use the power enrichment and timing to get it fine tuned. here's a tutorial i made for VHP to show how the tuner functions http://www.stealthram.com/vhptuner.htm
