cam with stock manifolds.
first off i tried using the search feature but ther is way too much stuff to sort through, with that said here is my question. Because i live in the beautiful but fucked up state of California I probably wont do headers, i just do not want to deal with the problems. o.k. now to the question, again. Is it worth it putting on a cam on a ls1 with stock manifolds and if there is what kind of cam. any and all help will be appreciated.

Headers are gonna be good for 10-15 HP.....torque gains are where headers REALLY shine....
If you are woried about smog compliance go for a set of shorties.....they aren't nearly as effective as LT's but most are smog legal
In all reality the LS1 exhaust manifolds aren't all that bad compared to some I've seen

Listen, since everybody's dancing around the subject, try something like the hot cam, but with faster ramps and wider lobe separation. Like a 218/226 .560/.560 114LSA cam ground +0 (no advance). It's more aggressive than the ZO6 cam and will make better torque down low. Should breeze through emissions.

i thought about putting on shorties but the consensus is not to do it.my last mod was the TC, and now i want to upgrade to a cam that will complement my TC, man California sucks when it comes to this emissions ****, i know people have put on lt's but i just do not want any hassle at all.thanks for the help so far fellas keep the info coming.

I'm going to keep stock manifolds and have pretty much decided on the MTI Stealth I cam, 220-220 .581-.581 115 LSA, believe it has 0 degree advance, but not sure.

I'm running stock manifolds and stock torque converter with a CompCams 206/212 .515/.522 112 cam. Runs fine without a tune. I picked that cam because I was looking for a cam that developed more low-end torque without loosing any power at the top end. It does just that. I gained ~3mph in the 1/8mph and ~1 mph in the 1/4. Off-idle & part-throttle response feels very punchy. Its a good stoplight-to-stoplight cam!
Since you got the high stall TC, I wouldn't recommend this small of a cam. The 212/218 or 216/220 will be better choices. IMO, anything larger will NEED to have headers to perform as designed.

Hmm, depends how radical you want to go. Being you have an auto and such you can get away with a 224 on a 114. Anything past that and I probiably wouldn't do it. A 216/220 cam is a good cam also which would have very stock like manners with a good powerband to 6200 rpm with a set of headers. I you stay with manifolds I would think you would be around the 360 range or so. With headers it just depends. No more than 375 I would imagine.

you can always buy a set of 00-02 manifolds and port them! that is what i did, and i will be using the hotcam. a couple of people have told me that they lost a .10 and gaines a mph by porting on a stock car. cant hurt right!!!

Usually cams with larger overlap need headers and a free flowing exhaust to aid in minimizing the intake charge from getting contaminated with exhaust gases from the previous combustion cycle. So, look for a cam that has less overlap if you plan on running the stock manifold. I believe the others when they say that the 2001 manifold is just as good as shorty headers.
If you want to make top end power and thus need more duration, look at getting one with a wider lobe separation to decrease the overlap. Actually someone suggested a 220/220 on a 115, that maybe a good one to checkout too.
