275 is the most I believe, maybe 285. 295 would be unsafe IMO.

ZR1 Style, Are they not 17X9.5? If so you would be safe with a 285mm tire 35-45 series

Sorry to hear you and the tire shop ignore manufacturer's recommendations.

I will repeat 285/40ZR17 is the widest RECOMMENDED tire for a 9" and 9.5" wide wheel

Most normal 315's are way too wide and mainly unsafe for a stock 17X9" SS wheel save for the Nitto 555R Drag Radial. When I was having my 285 GSD3's which run large mounted on my rims I put one side by side with a 315 555R and the Nitto was only milimeters wider than my 285. The 315 Nitto's run very small and are dwarfed by a real 315 tire.

Well people can and do install the 315 555R's all the time on stock 17X9" wheels without problems. They run so small they hardly bulge at all over the bead. I've never heard of someone losing a bead with one even during hard cornering. The 315's are really big for the 03+ Cobra guys as they fit fine on the their stock 17X9" wheels and they provide lotsa traction compared to stock F1's. They also don't have to worry about breaking a crappy 10 bolt either. As to your question of making it right to install them.....well if they are only mm's wider than my 285 GSD3's how can they cause a problem? My 285's have never had a problem and they bulge just a tad.

AS for people never having problems with Nittos, failing, I guees you don't read the board. There have been 3 occurrances reported of a NITTO tire disintgrating, typically durning a run down the freeway . . . .

People drink and drive all the time, so is that OK?

People smoke cigarettes and die, so is that OK?

So I repeat, if the manufacturer "NITTO" recommends a 10.5" wide wheel, minimum, why is it OK to encourage people to do something wrong?

It isn't right, never has been and never will be.

And on a side note, if buying a 315 series NITTO, nets you a section width in you opinion of a 285/295, then they are ripping you off . . .

Xsta, I have heard of the Nitto's failing but I think that was due to a defect in the tire, not having too large of tire for the specified rim size. I understand your point as Nitto does call for a 10.5" rim for their 315 555R. As far as encouraging people they should know that they are going against a manufacturer recommendation. While it may be technically wrong people still do it. I do agree that Nitto is ripping people off as their 315 is not the same size as say a 315 GSD3.
