Well i spent alot of time searching for different posts on ways that people remove the LS1. I chose to take it out from the bottom. I can not believe how easy it was to remove the whole engine with everything attached, and the transmission still attached to the motor. If anyone is planning to do it, pull it from the bottom.
Basically all you have to do it get all the wheels on ramps, or just the rears on ramps and the fronts on jack stands.
-remove the y-pipe
-remove the drive shaft
-loosen all the subframe and transmission mount bolts, (just break em loose)
-Take off the starter, and disconnect all the wires to it.
-take off the alternator and disconnect all the wires to it.
-take off the ac lines at the condensor, and at the radiator.(drain it first)
-disconnect all the engine harness clips and pull them through to the top.
-make sure you get the three ground wires on the back of the heads
-take off the two brake lines connected.
-attach the engine lift to the frame underneith the air box, and start to lift.
-take off the wheels
-place a rolling heavy duty cart underneith the subframe, centered.
-remove the ramps from the front and slowly start to drop the whole car onto the cart.
-Take off the subframe bolts and sway bar bolts.
-make sure everything is out of the way, and start to lift car up over the engine.
thats it, take your time it took me about 4 hours.

PS, why do you have to remove the alternator and starter? I thought you could just remove the wiring to them and do it that way.

the cart was from Harbor freight. i removed the alternator and starter because i didn't want to work in small places to get the wires off. it was alot easier. plus you can get the the ground strap under the starter.

right now my car is pretty much disassembled and engine is down to a shortblock so it shouldnt be all that much work to pull it from the bottom.

When I pulled my engine out I used a set of snowmobile skates. I put the 2 that go under the skis under the bottom A-arms and the rear flat one under the trans cross member. Worked like they were made for it.

How long did it take you to remove the motor. MBaskett and I can pull one from the top in 3 hours. Just want to know if it worth learing how to do it a new way.

why disconnect the ac, just unbolt the compressor and move it to the side, i have done this 3 times now and never opened up the ac system.
my method of removal is a little easier though, i have a lift.

Well Im new at this LS1 stuff. It took me about 15hrs total by myself to get mine out. Not too bad once it was ready to come out though. I just hope I can remember where everything goes!!!!!

The guys at GMMG say they can get one out of the bottom in 45 minutes, I have pulled them from the top in approx. 2 hrs.(longblock)

I think the re-install is even better than the un-install through the bottom. I put mine back in through the bottom by myself fast. No having to wiggle stuff around to get motor mounts to line up or to get the bellhousing/converter to line up.

The portion of getting the engine/tranny under the car, k-member bolted up, shock tower bolts in was probably 10 minutes, with just me, a lift, a dolly, and a small jack.

So headers, intake, waterpump, and pulley stay on? Did you disconnect the shocks at the A-arms? Sorry if these are stupid questions, I'm a little nervous about this even though i'll be using a lift.

I always pull it out the top and put it in the top, never had a problem with it, even less of one now that the twin turbo install is pretty much done, i cleaned up lots of stuff while doing that.

Does anyone have a write up on how to pull the engine without using a lift? This would probably make my heads and cam install alot easier and I can clean my engine bay and since I'll have it out I can do the clutch install while I'm at it. PM me if anyone knows how, thanks.

I pulled mine from the bottom. Out in just alittle over 1 hour. Like 1 hour and 10 minutes. What was really great about it was when I was reassembling I was setting in a chair bolting all the accessories back up instead of bending over the fenders and laying underneath it.
