Default Has ANYONE succeeded (or even attempted) in a 4L80 swap yet?

I can almost guarantee that I'll need a new tranny by the end of next season. I WILL have at least 4 gears. I keep looking at the options.

(transmission price only, conversion parts seperate)
1. FLP Level 5 4L65-E (cryo'd input shaft and drum)---$2850 Per FLP's website
2. T56 Swap with Viper internals and GM input shaft---$3000
3. TH400 swap with beefed up internals and GV unit---$3500-4000+ for trans and GV alone
4. Try a 4L80 swap and see what happens....---------$2000-3000
5. 200R4 Conversion---------------------------------$1900 (mild) - $4000 (wild)

I think 4 would be a fun challenge
Has anybody successfully done it yet?
I don't even want to hear the extra parasitic loss arguement, because I'm gonna have that regardless.
It's gonna have to hold up to a dual stage nitroused LS2 402 twice a week all summer...

Who's working on something like this?

I can only offer two things.
Get a '98 and up 4L80E.
They (as in someone I forgot) sell a harness to adapt your 4L60E plug to a 4L80E, it's short, the 4L80 doesn't use a 3-2 downshift solinoid so i guess thats why you need the special plug.
I've seen several people online who have done the swap.

1. Rossler or FLP 4L65E (all bells and whistles) Probably $3300
2. T56 Swap with beefed up internals God only knows
3. TH400 swap with beefed up internals and GV unit again, God only knows, nobody has disclosed a conversion price yet.
4. Try a 4L80 swap and see what happens....

A guy on camaroz28 posted a ton of pictures and stuff a while back. He had to clearance and of course make a lot of parts.

There seem to be plenty of posts from 2002 and 2003 and a few from early 2004, but nothing in detail. I can't believe of all the members on this board (or LS1.com, LS2.com, CamaroZ28.com) that have had tranny problems, there isn't one single writeup on the swap. The question has been asked a million times now, but always fizzles out after 3 or 4 posts

Oh well, if I don't see one by the time I fry my tranny, I guess I'll have to do the writeup

I'll be doing one this winter in my CE. Rossler is building it now, with a few extra goodies thrown inside. The only thing though; I won't be running a stock PCM. I've got a BigStuff 3 going in the car.
Rossler said he can build them as strong as needed. I'm looking for 800+rwhp. and will be tearing up the track and streets each weekend. He said not a problem.

In that case, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE keep us informed on how the install goes. We're in dire need of a good install writeup for this.

You can get a built 400 trans with a GV overdrive unit for around 3500-4000 bucks

Thank you for the info Chitown
I heard that the decent TH400's usually start at 1200 and go up, so that sounds right.
But what if you have to buy a serious TH400? Between gear upgrades, pump upgrades.....That combo price could easilly push 5000. Fair enough of an assumption?

I dont know how crazy you wana get with your hp, but my wifes car, 99 z heads cam. made 404 rwhp, 400 ft lbs of torque off the gun. has a $900 brand new th400 trans with full reverse manual valve body and a $350 art carr 3800 stall converter and has yet to break anything with tons of strip passes and 10k street miles with 3.73 gears and a 28" tall tire. cruzes at 2800 rpm @ 75 mph with a GV overdrive unit, you would be around 1800 rpms with the same setup

Can someone give me an idea within say $200 what the 4L80 is gonna cost with the upgrades they're doing, just for a comparison for all of us to see?

TwnTrboCE, I'd REALLY like to hear roughly what Rossler is charging you to set yours up, as it's slightly over the power level I'd like to build, but probably still close in price.

I've spent increasing amounts of time looking at "Quadzilla" lately, but I think the level 2 would work better for me. And I don't want the TC they're gonna charge me anyway if I buy from them. I might give Rossler a call myself and see what I should be looking at.

V-10 killer, I can't really give you a price because I don't have an exact total yet. I can tell you that it is very expensive. Plus the 4l80e that he is building for me is extra special. Also you won't need one built as far as mine because a high powered turbo setup is hell on trannies.

A built TH400 with a GV unit will be cheaper. But I want fully programable auto shifts, a lockup converter, and the joy of being able to just get in the car put it in drive and go.

I would buy parts from them(and have) but the only trans I would buy without personally seeing it built would be a rossler -- they are basically the LPE of the transmission industry.

This is a good topic, and I'd like to see where it goes.

I had wondered what would be required to put a 4L80E in place of a 4L60E. Lets just assume it was a hybrid, or a conversion, or whatever.

What do you need to do to put it in, and make it work. Will it work with the stock computer? Besides and mount or clearance issues, are there any otehr issues related specifically to the 4L80E that must be done?

Thanks...

If it is a 99+ computer you can get the wireing harness adapter and get all the shifts and everything to work if it is a 98 you will have to get it full manuel shift. becuse the computer in 98 does not support the 4l80e.

Quick Reply: Has ANYONE succeeded (or even attempted) in a 4L80 swap yet?
