Default Dealer is very Scetchy, need help.

This is my first LS1 and it has 86000 miles on it. The dealer told me that i didnt need to change the timing belt at 100k and that the water pump didnt need changing unless there is something wrong with it. What do you guys make of this? Other than the normal maintenence, what should i do to either bring the car "back". Right now it rides fine, it idles perfect, but feels a little lumpy when stopped, Also i have a little sound coming from the pulley area, which i was told is normal for these cars. Other than that she runs good.

what does "lumpy when stopped" mean...explain more please?

My water pumped lived till 105K.....the timing belt doesn't need to be changed till you get the urge to throw a cam in it....

How much they asking for it? Is it modded at all? manual or automatic? any wrecks before?

my car makes a "noise" from the pulley area also....made it since the day i bought it.....i think it might be the power steering pump. cause my steering wheel is SUPER easy to turn, but it's been like that since i bought the car with 25,000 on it(has 108k now)........

need a little more info....

Lumpy Idle....
Is the whole car vibrating/shaking like a wild cam?
- OR -
Is there a slight lump/kick/vibration every few seconds?
That is normal as long as the RPMs are constant (at least it is for me). If the RPMs surge or fall then replace the O2s, spark plugs, wires, and fuel filter. Any one of those could be the issue, but if they are the originals its time for them to be replaced anyway.

The rpms are always fine. Lets say i am sitting at a light, every couple of seconds i will get a slight vibration/shake, nothing wild at all. Also the car is a 98 Trans Am auto. No accidents, the car is already mine, just want to know what kinda things should i do to keep it maintained.

Might be a vaccum leak, or crappy plugs......being a higher mileage car, here's my list for ya.....

plugs-NGK TR-55 V-power
wires-Taylor
Fuel filter-Stock replacement
Oil-Mobil one 10w30 or something similiar
oil filter-mobil one

Maybe tranny fluid and rear end....that's a personal decision......

Do all that, and i bet she runs like a brand new car!!

Did you buy the car new or used?
What maintenance has been done?
How often have all the fluids and filters have been replaced (oil, air filter, coolant, brake fluid, transmission fluid & filter, rear differential fluid, fuel filter)?

I bought the car used with 82000 miles, i have had the oil changed, rear fluid changed, fuel filter changed and thats it. It has a clean K&N. I do know that when i last checked my coolant, there was this nasty orange gunk on the stick. It looked like gunked up rust or something. The car never overheats though. Also every 1.5 to 2 months i have to add about a half quart of oil.

That is extremly normal, nothing to worry about there.....

Sounds like you're on top of everything else....just change your plugs and wires, and see where that gets ya

There is no timing belt, it's a chain and should last the
life of the motor (though people change them with a
cam swap just because you're already there).

If you see crusty stuff in the coolant you can get it
flushed & refilled with fresh DexCool and distilled water.

My car always shook a little at idle, from new.

You should flush and replace the coolant. Since you dont know about the brakes and transmission fluids (and trans filter), I'd suggested replacing them too.

Run back to AOL plz k thx.

How do you know that an auto is not exactly what he wanted? If I wanted a track car, it sure wouldn't be a 6 speed. If I lived in a big city, I sure wouldn't want a 6 speed.

And if the woman had any say in it, I wouldn't have got a 6 speed

Oh well, guess she can't drive it. Shucks.

I would personally do the following . Some of these items have been mentioned before:

1. Oil/filter change - Mobil 1 or your choice of synthetic (Search "Patman" ).
2. Plugs (NGK TR55's) - Wires shouldn't be necessary.
3. Fuel filter
4. Flush/fill coolant 50/50 de-ionized water and Dex-Cool (sludge).
5. Top End cleaner (Seafoam)
6. New Air filter
7. Brake job (if needed)
8. Top off tranny/powersteering fluids (if needed)
9. GET A CUSTOM TUNE!!

Unless you have mechanical issues, the above should make her drive like a champ.

I knew I was forgetting a fluid. At that mileage, it would probably be a good idea to replace the power steering fluid instead of just topping it off.

so the LS1 "shaking" at idle is normal?? yikes..

like theyve mentioned, the timing chain wouldnt need to b changed unless it brakes or cam swap. what brought up the water pump Q?? doesnt need changing unless the its leeking from the weep hole or gaskets. 90k miles is too much to buy a car at IMO.

ive been thinkin bout adding the new GTO to my collection, but i dont want a car that shakes at idle. do all LS1s do this??

I also have an acura Tl with type s heads, cams, custom low compression pistons, vtec controller, a/f controller, comptech headers, comptech supercharger, H&R springs, Koni yellows, Nuespeed front and rear sways, Ron jon wheels, and nitto 550's. I know my acura and its motor inside out. I just dont know the LS1. The reason i got it was because i didnt want to sell the acura, my heart is in that car and i wanted an LS1. They guy who owned it was in his late 40's and babied the car. I got it for a steal at 6500. I had my mechanics take a look at the car and it was in great shape. The body even looked like he didnt drive it much. BTW i have a few mods coming for the LS1. And in case you guys are wondering what kinda numbers i'm putting down with the acura. It ran a 13.6 at E-town last summer.

I'm sure you'll beat that time with your bone stock LS1 with stock tires .

considering the car went 16.4 stock, i think it's doing rather well. There have been some guys that pull low 13's with a high boost pulley and some other mods and tuning, but they are always having fuel problems, even with upgraded fuel systems. I am happy with a daily driven luxury car with navi that can run mid 13's. Also its a beast up high too. Highway pulls are much better for me than off the line runs. If i were able to get better traction i think i would run much better, i keep spinning through 1st and most of second at the track. My lowest 60' was 2.2. Anyway, back on topic, what else do you guys think i should do to maintain the LS1.
