Check out the few threads on the 205cc AFR heads. That's what I'm getting and I've been checking out lots of offerings from various vendors. Small runners with good cfm flow across the power range.
They will offer a 225cc head as well for larger cubic inch motors (396+) and all out max effort 346/348ci motors. Power down low won't be as good though I'd imagine.
Are you talking about drag or road race?

As stated in the new book called "How to Build High-Performance Chevy LS1/LS6 V-8's", GMPP's(GM Performance Parts) CNC'd LS6 heads are the most copied heads by head porters. They were designed for showroom stock racing i think.
AFR has released the new 205's and 225's castings I am sure they will be compaired and copied just as well by other companies.
Probably the best bargain would be the assembled heads offered by Patriot. They come with new headbolts and gaskets. $1400.00

i think any ported head will outperform an ls6 head... but yeah the 1400 patriot's are similar to ls6 heads and are ported and flow quite a bit more than the stock ls6 casting...a user on this board (gomer) made over 450hp with them and a futral f13 cam...so i'd say they perform quite well

We've got quite a nice assortment of heads, too... all of our heads are done by Felber Racing. You can see more info on them by coming to www.revxtreme.com and then clicking on Felber's link.

GTP heads really are some of the best heads out there. Some of the fastest cars in the country are running GTP heads. Look at what heads are on Thunder Racing's cars (hint: GTP)
It's not all about monster flow, it's about monster velocity. That is why the GTP heads outperform the others.
Check my sig, I have a set for sale.

There are a lot of companiesd that do really nice heads for 1800 or less after shipping and core charges.
I would look in the dyno section and see who's heads are making power. You will find most head's sold by sponsor's here are pretty damn good. If your lucky you will find a shop close to to you that can spec a cam for you and do the install and tune as well.
Take 2 hours and get a list of 8-10 different shops and call them.
Buy from whoever sells their product the best.
