tapping noise when cold start
A buddy of mine has a 2001 SS w/ 60,XXX miles, and also he had some new rings put in under warranty, but anyway my ? is when he does a cold start up its a noticeable tapping noise for a while. When the car warms up it goes away. What could be the problem?
Thanks for looking and shining some light

What kind of oil filter does he use. I've got a pretty bad case of piston slap in my Expedition (I know...it's a Ford...), and depending on the oil filter, it's either barely noticable or VERY apparent. I had always used K & N oil filters, and the piston slap could only be noticed (just barely) on the coldest (sub zero) mornings. I had to buy a Fram UltraGuard whatever in a pinch, and it sounded like my engine was going to destroy itself. Something about crappy ADB valves in Frams....Anyway, back to the K&N, and it's all but gone.

Dam if its really piston slap he is going to be devastated. I hope its just the lifters. Is there a way to check if it is piston slap or lifters. Thanks for the replies guys.
