What do you guys think of my setup ???
Right now mods are on my sign. I am going to change the cam in my car within the next few months, but theres so many I am not sure I am picking the right one. Right now this is what I have in mind:
- Speed Inc. Custom Grind 224/224 .581/.581 lsa 112
- Comp pushrods
- Comp 918 Springs
- Spec Stage 3 Clutch
- Speed Inc. Tune
- LS6 Intake (not sure if this is a waste of money)
- possibly Lanes True Duals (not sure if they'll out flow my cut-out)
The car is daily driven and sees the track 2-3 times a year. I would like to see 12.0 to 12.2 times and around 400 rwhp. I am trying to stay on a budget and don't want to invest in heads, also I don't want anything that will dramatically decrease MPG. What do you guys think?

I'd say thats a great setup for what you want. The LS6 intake IS a good choice, it really does help, and you can find them in the for sale forum now since a lot are upgrading to the LSX / LS2 intakes. It depends on what you really want, but you should know you can run a slightly bigger cam while retaining total driveability. Futral's cams are well known for being very driveable, I have the F11 (228/230 .576/.595 112) and it drives like stock. The F13 is a little larger and also has very good driveability. Both of those cams consistently make around 410rwhp, so its something you may want to consider.

The LS6 intake is definately a good mod. I've seen a cammed LS1 pick up 18rwhp over the stock LS1 intake on the dyno with the addition of an LS6 intake. While the Lanes True Duals might not make any more peak rwhp @ rwtq than your cutout I would bet they will shine in the lowend @ midrange power band over a Y pipe setup.
You've picked an awesome daily driver/weekend track setup that should make around 385-400rwhp and with a good driver hit your ET goals pretty easily. I've gotten as high as 29.3 MPG with my setup below cruising in 6th at 75mph. If you want to stay with thr 3.42 gearing stick with a 224 grind. If your gonna go 3.73 or 4.10s you can go a little bigger on the cam size and still retain DD driveability.

Thanks for the replies, I just have one more question : I heard the 224 can be hard on valve springs, can the Comp 918 springs last for over 40K or should I but grade to Patriot Dual Springs?

I would go with the Patriot Duals just for peace of mind of having the added benefits of a dual spring. I ran 918s on my stock heads for 4800 miles and they had lost considerable open @ closed seat pressure. They were also installed correctly so this was not a case of improper install. JMHO

i would do the 224/ 563 lift cam with the 26918 springs ,only because you daily drive the car. the springs will go a lot more miles with the lower lift and you wont lose but about 5-7 horsepower from the 581.have them port the throttle body along with doing the ls6 intake this will gain you abut 20 hp.

The FM13 will be driveable yes with the 3.42s. It will be undergeared compared to a smaller cam setup but that is up to you and your liking. At the track this cam is gonna beg for some 4.10s. I would call Futral and ask them the proper rear gearing they recommend for the FM13. Odds are they will say 4.10s if not they are blowing smoke up your ***!

Now, I am not sure, I want to stay with 3.42s because I don't like the driveablility of a car with gears, and I am not upgrading to a 12 bolt. So I take it the F13 cam doesn't do well in low end rpms. Now I am confused about which cam to go with? I want low, mid, and high rpm range, with 400+rwhp, and I am thinking about getting an ASA crank pulley also.

well, u might be ok with ur 10 bolt rear...but its all in how u drive it. i suggested the 12 bolt cuz it looks like your car might see some track time....and u might not wanna launch too hard with the 10 bolt ridin on nittos. but yeah, definitely do the asp while youre there...and u might as well throw a new chain on there while ur at it.

The F11 and F13 both drive and idle almost identically. Also remember that you will only see a 6-8 peak rwhp increase between the two, and thats coming straight from Allan. Don't worry about it with 3.42's. My roomate, Winman, has 3.42's and its fine. He says he can feel a diff when he drives mine with the 3.73, but its really not a necessity. I can't stress how driveable this cam is.

hmm sounds like i may get the f13... i have an auto with 3.23 gears and a 3000 stall.. ive been told i can make it work especially if i go with a 3.42 or 3.73!! i think u will be fine with the f13 in a 6sp car.. i was considering running the F9 which is 232/236!
