I just got failed today for having clear side markers, and LED bulbs. They are the right colors, amber and red, and the lenses even carry a DOT number. I think the LED's maybe too. But how the hell are they illegal? There just a different style light.

I searched the VA laws, and found this: http://leg1.state.va.us/cgi-bin/legp...19VAC30-70-160
The only thing I could find was this:
I. Inspect for and reject if:
6. Any lamp is not of an approved type or if lamps to be burned together as a pair do not emit the same color light
a. Lamps are not of an approved type or a lamp has been altered
Maybe the "approved type" thing?

I beleive the packaging on the LED's state for off road use only.
Plus on the clear corners, a car is to have an amber REFLECTOR, on the front corners and a red REFLECTOR on the rear corners of the car, the light being the correct color is good, but the reflector needs to be colored too . . .
They failed you more for the reflector I bet.

I was told this by a State Trooper. It is illegal for any car to alter any part of the factory lighting. This includes changing bulbs, lenses, etc. 99% of the cops won't harass you about it, but I can see how inspection stations would.. Just because.
Get a inspection hook up is my recommendation! I always need one. Here's mine reason which is similar to yours, execpt maybe they won't notice mine don't come on at all?

Wow, that hawk looks sweet Thanks for the pics.
I had to go home and put the stock stuff back in, then they gave me the sticker. I was asking if it was legal or not, because the inspector really wasnt sure, and to cover his tail, just failed me. I see why now. Thanks for the responses and info.
