Advise: Going with a TR224 cam next step go with lt headers/y-pipe or converter/gears
Hey all:
I am getting ready to do a tr224 cam and springs on my 02 Z-28 automatic with 273 gears.
Mods on car so far are k&n, slp air lid, bellows boot, ported throttle body and catback system. What should I go with next?
Note: I am looking for more mid and top end rather than off the line. If I take it to the track it will be only once a year. Looking more for power in the 30-40mph range and stomp on it or freeway 65-70mph range and stomp on it.
Should I go with a set of LT headers and catted y-pipe
OR
Should I go with a 3,200 stall and 342 gears
Thanks all

This is what you need, in this order:
1) 3000+ stall and 3.73 gears
2) LT headers with high flow cats and a true dual exhaust. Get ride of your single muffler crap (hell even flowmaster makes 2.5" dual with crossover and two mufflers for under $400 for 4th gen ls1 cars)
3) heads

You really need all the Mod's. If your not a track runner, then a 2800-3200 stall and 3.42 gears would be just fine for the street. I wouldn't really do a cam without the supporting mods needed to take advantage of getting all the power out of it, in which case you would want the LT's and Y-pipe to go along with the cam. My .02...

Yeah, ideally, you need all of it but do the gears and converter first. I remember I was all set to buy a cam with a stock verter and stock 2.73's. I am SO glad I didn't. I have a 3500 stall and 3.73's now and don't regret it at all.

You don't need gears. 2.73s will pull very very hard for a race starting at 35 mph or 65 mph once you have a good set-up. You need a torque converter & headers to go with the cam. The torque converter comes first. Tune it properly, including setting your shift points to match the cam and converter and you'll be very glad you kept those gears.

f10 is bigger then the 224 tr cam though.. with a 3200 vig id say he could keep the 2.73's... with anything less id get a 3.23-3.73... hell id get the gear anyways, but he doesn't "have" to with this cam..
but dude.. get the cam, headers and duals, 3.42ish gear, and 3000-3500 stall and u will love it.
