Default Rocker Install- won't center over valve stem

During the process of installing the rockers, I noticed that a few of them were not seating directly over the valve. As I torqued them down the rocker would move in the direction that the bolt was moving and the ends of the rockers would point slight towards the back of the car (vs. to the side of the car as they are supposed to).
From looking at the wear pattern on the rocker, it seems as though they were installed from the factory this way (Harland Sharp modded the rockers and noticed this as well).
Does anyone have any hints on how to get the rockers to stay centered over the valve while they are being torqued down?

Thanks
Ben

Hold them in place with one hand, and torque them down with the other.

I usually torque 'em down, crank the motor over a few times, and retorque. They all end up being centered. If they still don't center up, its possible your rocker bolt hole is drilled slightly off center.

they should line up no matter what! The rocker retainer plate might be screwed up or something if it was like that from the factory!

I tried to brace the rocker arm while torqueing it down, but they inevitably move towards the back of the car during the last 20 degrees of bolt tightening.
A few remain centered, but a couple wander rearward.

On the passenger side I'm assuming? On the drivers side, they should wander forward as you tighten. Have you tried spinning the motor over a few times?

Yes- it moves to the front on the driver's side, to the rear on the passenger's side.

I'll try it this weekend when I get my car back.

Thanks
Ben
