Default Rockers

I just ordered a F13 with this package

"Futral Motorsports Cam Package Upgrade-Add Precision Race Components Dual Valve Spring Kit (Includes dual springs rated to .650 lift, titanium retainers, seats, intake & exhaust seals), FMS 7.400" Chromemoly Pushrods to FMS Cam Selection"

Could I reliably get some larger rockers since this is 595/585 and the springs are rated to 650? Just looking to get as much stuff done while Im in the engine, get it all done at once. Im having everything installed May 14th so I still have time.

IF you have the necessary valve-to-piston clearance and the valve springs are rated for your intended valve lift, yes, you could go with "bigger" aka higher-ratio rockers like the Crane 1.80 Quick-Lift kit (which actually have a 1.82 ratio).

However, with the cam you're getting, your final max. valve lift with a set of the Crane 1.80's would be .637/.626 which will, without question, require piston heads with "eyebrows" to prevent clearance problems.

Ahh, thats too much work for the buck. What about things I see like timing chain/oil pump etc...?

I agree. In your situation, I'd go with the 1.70's. You'll still get a nice increase in power from them with a minimum of work involved.

I think Im going to skip the rockers for now, the last thing I see that I may need to get is a timing chain, is the stock one crap or will it work RELIABLY with all these mods?

Don't mess with the rockers. The stock rockers are great and can take some abuse. The money can be better spent elsewhere.

Ok, Im coming up to a point where stuff I order now may not make it in time for my install. Last 3 questions, upgrade oil pump? 2. Upgrade timing chain? 3. ASP pulley and belts?

What car are you putting this stuff on? 2001 and 2002's don't need an oil pump upgrade. For the timing chain, use a JWIS or LS2 chain. Double roller's are over kill and cause other problems. ASP pulley is a good upgade with no side effects; order it with the belt the vendor recomends.

2000 TA Vert A4, so would you recommend a LS6 oil pump? The only downside i see to the pulley is they say it does something with the alternator that would be bad for someone with lots of stereo? I have 2 amps and a subwoofer if it makes a difference. On the timing chain, the double roller roll master is actually cheaper than the JIWS, are the side effects bad enough for the JIWS to be $30 more?

Thanks for the advice guys

Your oil pump should be fine. If you want to replace it, that is up to you. I have the Rollmaster Double Timing Chain and it fits great. I would get it. The ASP Pullies have been machined to clear the double row timing chains. With the cam, you will have to raise the idle and that will keep your charging system is good working order. I have 2 amps and a 10" sub and have zero charging problems.

Ok, so what benefit does a timing chain provide?

With the ASP underdrive pulley I should have no charging problems correct?

Is the oil pump not worth the money (ported LS6) or why does everyone seem to be getting a new one when they get a cam?

Sorry for all the questions just have to order the last bits of this for my install in a few weeks.

TIA

Once you remove the front cover, you will see how much slack the stock chain has. The Rollmaster has very little slack. The Rollmaster is more durable and a tighter chain will have more accurate valve timing.

With the ASP Pulley, you will have no charging issues after the tune. I have had my pulley for 4 years and not one problem with charging.

I bought the Ported LS6 Pump because I have a 1998. The 98's have junk pumps and I had 75K miles on it. The ported LS6 pump will flow more oil. With a timing chain replacement, you have to remove the oil pump anyway. I would say get one. The stock pump is about 1/2 the cost of the ported versions. I bought mine from Thunder Racing and they always do nice work. Make sure you get a new oil pickup oring.
