Default two front bolts on these damn door bars driving me nuts

k so what have you guys done to get at those suckers..i'm trying to get these door bars out for this year, been wanting to do it since i put the 8 point rollbar in the car.

i ground down a socket and got the back one easy enough and hole sawed a hole in the door to slide the bar out but i cannot for the life of me get these two 10mm ones at the front of the bar.

i have been able to get a 10mm gear wrench on there but then it seems the wrench is too long and hits inside the door shell so it won't move..will a shorter wrench work maybe?

i ground down a 10mm 1/4" drive socket and all that did was ruin a socket for no reason, ratchet still wouldn't clear in there on the door shell.

looking for some ideas from guys that have done it, let me know.

cut down 10mm socket on a 1/4 " craftsman breaker bar to break it loose and a short 10mm box wrench to finish getting them out. Camaros are a bitch, firebirds are easy Fun part is those 10mm bolts have loctite on them that works very well so you have to fight it the whole way.

so kev you're saying a 1/4 break bar is thinner than a ratchet and will slip in there with the ground socket? already ground down a 1/4 10mm socket to nothing so guess i'll go to the store and see abotu a 1/4 breaker bar, abotu the only thing i don't have lol.

cut off wheel.

I tried the same thing as you and it just got me mad.

Cut the bar and bracket where the bar is only half, not the full round bar.

Takes no time at all.

Its thinner, you have to grind the socket to almost nothing - craftsman 10mm 6pt sockets are only 1.99

Or use the cutoff wheel like sean said, I couldnt get it there well at all with mine so I unbolted it..

I ground 2 flat spots across from each other on a 10mm 1/4" drive socket, then got a wrench on the open end side and broke it loose that way. All the other methods I had no luck. Its gonna be a little time consuming since there's no room in there, but the bolt is far out enough, you can use the gear wrench.

well my stupid compressor died and i don't have the cash to deal with it right now so unbolting is gonna have to be my method, may as well since i already ground the 10mm socket down to nothing(yes Kev I have many of those already lol) gonna go get a 1/4 breaker bar to try and crack em loose with.

What i did wascut about an inch of the "open" side od a 10 mm open end wrench to get one 10mm bolt. and the other i just drilled a hole from the outside of the door (like when its closed the side that faces the fron of the car) and got it thru there.

I just pulled four door bars out of two cars yesterday.

I took a 10mm short and cut it down some more, about half. You can unscrew the bolt about 3-5 threds then the 1/4 rachet will get stuck against the door. So then welded the 10mm inside of a racheting 14mm wrench.
I also had to use a cheater bar to break loose the 94Z door bars. PNTA

You can also take a dremmel and cut around the nut and pull it threw still attached to the bar.

I will post a pic of the wrench later on today.

a 1/4 craftsman ratchet is not coming even remotely close to fitting between the nut and the door skin on my car, even with the socket ground down to nothing, gonna try the breaker bar idea or the dremel idea sounds ok,too..cut that retainer away from teh thread side and just pull it through.

Try this it worked for me!
Take a pair of good vise grip pliers and grab onto the side of the 8 pt socket. You can get just a little more than a 1/8 turn at a time. I hook both front bolts out in just a few minutes.
After I removed the bolts, slide the rubber boot off the front of the door, removed the front wheels and wheel well liner, slide the bars out the front of the door hole into the wheel well area and out the nose vents just under the fog lights.

A 10 open end wrench is what i used. The bolts towards the front end is a pain in the ***. this is how i got the second bolt off. You have to get it on there straight accross , sorta like the closed end of the wrench is pointing in the fender when the door is open. Kinda hard to explain. i know the pass side I put the wrench on and used a bigger open end wrench to push up on the 10 wrench to break the bolt lose. The drivers side is impossible to stick your hand in there and pull down to break it loose. So i had too be ghetto. I made a Zip Tie chain(3 loops) tied one side on the closed end of the 10 wrench, then stuck a bigger wrench in the middle of the other end and used it as a handle so i can pull down and break the bolt loose. You guys are prolly saying im a joke, but it worked for me. you can email me your number and I can sorta explain it on the phone better.
