What kind of shifter?

There should be two bolts that hold the shifter stick to the base. Its common on after market shifters for them to loosen up. A little shot of lock tite cured mine.

just pop the boot off and tighten the 2 bolts connecting the stick to the shifter

did they maybe roll around and get caught somewhere under the boot?

There probably down there. Probably rolled between the carpet and trans tunnel.
Had the same thing happen with my Hurst when I got the car.
Ripping through the gears one day I noticed alot of slop. Popped off the shifter boot and sure enough the bolts were just about backed all the way out. A little lock-tite, tightened them up and she was good to go. Soon after swapped to a B&M Ripper . After doing that I couldn't even imagine going back to the Hurst.

Haaahahaa...same thing happened to me once only with a different shifter. I thought the whole trans was wiped out or something. Use loctite and tighten the crapp outta the bolts when you reinstall.

that's hilarious...for some reason i just started laughing because i got a mental picture of some guy rowing the gears and then bam he is holding a shifter in his hands with a confused face...someone should make a cartoon...i'm sure you would get plenty of laughs...

on a serious note i'm glad you found the bolts...just put some locktite on there and you'll be set

It is kinda funny...I guess there's not much chance of danger with this problem unless you're stuck in a bunch of traffic and it happens while you're in neutral and you can't get off the road. Or unless you panic and do something stupid...
Anyway, glad no one and no cars got hurt.

i installed my pro 5.0/lss yesterday and this just happened to me. i'm in fourth and that MF just pops out and i'm coasting. it could've been ugly if i was doing the whole "left turn yeild on green" thing and just stopped in the middle of the lane. don't forget the loctite!

the stock Hurst is a very decent shifter, it's the rubber mount handle that makes the setup suck
