TSP heads and cam package question!!
Hey guys,
I am in the near future looken to put a heads and cam package on my car. I have been looken around and searchen the web but cant make up my mind but i somewhat like the TSP head and cam package
**Precision Race Components 5.3L Stage II Cylinder Heads - No Exchange, Your Choice of TSP Camshaft, TSP Chromemoly Hardened Pushrods, GM Heads/Cam Bolt & Gasket Kit, TSP Ported LS6 Oil Pump**for 2279.00 which i think is a good deal. Although i hear with the 5.3 heads it raises your compression, is it still ok to run nitrous through it if i ever wanted too? Also what would be the best cam to run that would be similar to the FM13 from TSP?
thx rob

The heads have done pretty well, you can find some dyno graphs in the dyno section further down in the forum. As far as cams, I'd prob look in the 232/234 or the 235/240 (or similiar). The 231/237 while will probably make the power you want both on and off nitrous, you can make a little more with some of the more recent releases from TSP. One other thing I do like about the 231/237 is that is will use every ounce of nitrous you give it, its a very nitrous happy cam.

You will be just fine using the 5.3 heads with the nitrous.. and yes the 231/237 cam sounds really good. has a very good lope to it. but you should try one of the bigger cams that they have out now. the 231/237 is damn good but its gettin old..

awesome, i just did my first set of headers, i got pacesetter, i was dissapointed with there quality, the 3rd bolt on on the passenger side, where there is 2 bolts didnt even line up so i had to leave it out so i didnt strip the head if i had not already since i tried for awhile, will i be ok with 5 bolts on that side?sry of subject but i am gunna get new headers once i do that install, it should be about 5 to 6 months away, i want hooker ceramic. Looks like the 231/237 does perform well.

Yeah i figured here in awhile i will take that header off and dyegrind the opening so it fits better. I just didnt have the time or resources at the moment. I dont believe that it will leak there i mean god there are 2 bolts within inches of each other. I may be wrong?

if I were you I would do the futural fm13 or 14 and match em up with a set of TEA 5.3L stage 1.5 heads, I think brent at tea still has a few sets left on his special.....
Total Engine Airflow 5.3, CNC ported stage 1.5 rev.2 onsale!!
This sale will only last until I am out of 5.3 cores!
What you get is our new CNC ported Stage 1.5 heads. We use Ferrea 2.02 intake valves, Stock exhaust valves,New GM seals, and Locks, Titanium retainers, and .660 lift Gold springs!
These heads compared to an AFR 205 head that we flowed, outflow it from .100 to .600 lift on our bench.(both heads flowed the same way on a 3.9"bore with a clay radius) They also have a 5cc smaller intake runner than our previous stage 1.5 5.3l head.
The sale price also includes milling, assembly and flow testing intake and exhaust. This is a straight up purchase!! NO CORE CHARGE!!!
$1550.00 plus shipping ($30-$50) and tax where required.(Oh and Nv)
heres a flow sample against the afr 205's
Below is the average of the last 3 sets we have done with the new program test 2 is an AFR 205 as tested on our bench. All heads tested with radiused inlet,3.9 bore

Bigrob339- I would look into our Torquer cam or if you're wanting something a little bit bigger, you could go with our 233/239. Stay tuned for a heads/cam special that will offer better performance at a lower price! Give us a call if you have any questions about our packages!

NEW 5.3 Stage 1.5 rev2 Heads, cam of your choice, GM bolts and Gaskets and TFS pushrods with no core for 2080.00 How much does a ported oil pump cost I will send them to TSP for that
Our heads are not Shelf heads they are custom made to order for each and every customer that calls. We don't use a cookie cutter at our shop.If you want them with a custom chamber we can do it. If you need a better exhaust valve than the one we use that has been race proven by more one cars and on more than one occassion proven to be good into the 9.80 range in ET. We can do it. We use Ferrea Intake Valves, TEA .660 "gold Springs" Ti retainers and cups that really fit the guide! We don't throw in that .060" wobble for free like our competitors!
If you want to upgrade to Larger valves we can do it.
On a side note I also seriously doubt you will out power our products! I mean we both know where your program came from?
Have a great day Brent!
BTW your Platinum race springs are suppossed to be good to .670 lift remember.

Will do brian, i am actually leaning toward just a cam right now, i will get the head lata, what cam will do good on stock heads but then will do even better on stage 1.5 or 2.5, i mean i know all will do better, but what is the best of both world, 231/237 or the Trq2? I also wanna shift around 6400 to 6500 rpms if that helps. Also u TSP guys doin a special on you cam packages, i would be in the hunt for one here in about month.

Wow Brent good to see how classy you guys are about having some new competition! First of all I feel I need to defend our product. We use the same spring seat as you use. Before the stock size spring seats were finished we offered a larger seat, but that was awhile back. I never get in a TEA post & talk down your products, it just seems like you could have the same respect for us. I never tell anyone TEA has a bad product because I don't think they do.
As far as the spring lift is concerned we adjusted the retainer some & lowered the Platinum springs max lift to .660" We can change retainers how ever we need because we have a CNC machine specific for cutting retainers.
No cookie cutter programs here guys, we've finshed LS6, 5.3l, LS1, 6.0l, & even a LT1 program already.

Now back on topic The Heads Cam Package from TSP
I would look into something like the Torquer 2 232/234 XER lobed camshaft. The Torquer 2 camshaft has aggressive lobes just like the new 233/239 R2 camshaft & the 237/242 MS3 camshaft. The 231/237 camshaft worked well in it's time, but honestly the newer XER style lobes work better We try not to order 231.237 camshafts anymore just for that reason
As far as custom cylinder heads are concerned, we offer a few different options for valves like:
2.02 valves
2.04" (Standard valves)
2.055"
2.065"
2.080"
&
1.575" exhaust
1.60" exhaust
We're not going away & we're going to make sure the cylinder heads are right the first time!

Haha god, I didnt mean for you guys to start bashing each other lol, but it is good to read. Jason, how many rpms would I have to spin those cams to get good performance, i mean i dont wanna shift ar 6800 on my stock bottom end for some reason. I feel that it would be safe to spin it around 6400 to 6500. Are those cams power ranges too high for what i am looken for? Also, you guys gunna run some special on your cam packages soon?

Not trying to start a fight at all guys, just wanting to defend our product!
The 232/234 camshaft would probably be perfect for you! It typically picks up about 45rwhp cam only & should really fly with a good cylinder head The Torquer camshaft should peak about 6200 rpms so shifting at 6500 would be fine!
