Default dissapointing head flow numbers

I am guessing this is why my dyno numbers were 10-15 rwhp less than I expected. MTI claims the stage 2R (2.055/1.60) flow 320+ @ .600. To compare, I have a friend with home ported 2.02 heads that flowed 298 @ .600
My heads are at Cylinder Head Specialtys out in Kansas right now. Chris is taking care of the bent valves I had, which by the way MTI sent me 2.02 valves even when I told them I needed 2.055 valves.
What do you guys think?

Intake Exhaust
.100 66.1 55.0
.200 138.7 103.2
.300 202.8 144.1
.400 258.3 183.8
.500 284.8 188.5
.550 295.2 195.7
.600 297.2 202.4

Those numbers aren't bad, just not great. Hard to say if they compare though since they were most likely flowed on a different bench with a different radiused entry.

I was under the impression that all calibrated flow benches will be within 1% of each other. I was dissapointed because these heads are going on a 370 or 408 (which ever I build) and was told to expect 320. Maybe MTI inflates their numbers?

do your heads look as good as the pics on their site? the pics they show have had alot of detail to the bowl area around the valve stem .... i thought the pics shown may not be typical of what you get

damn, I always expected the Stage2R heads to flow really good. Makes me wonder what mine flow. I dunno much about flow testing though to know if there are any variables that could come into play.

The benches themselves may be; but who's to say they didn't flow it without a pipe, or with/without an intake (which makes a HUGE difference in the numbers). One person can change the flow numbers easily by 20cfm just by chaning things around, even though the bench and heads are the exact same. Also I hope you aren't trying to blame MTI for the bent valves because they sent you smaller valves Seems like you are just upset that it is not what you ordered, but you never know. There are some things on this board that make me wonder and go WTF.

Your numbers lead me to believe that they flow fairly well , unless your cam is really big.

Are they LS1 or LS6 castings? They flow very well for a LS1 casting and decent for a LS6.

LS1 castings. 853 I think
Not blaming MTI for bent valves, you must have read that wrong. Blaming them for me picking up the phone, saying "Hi, I have 2R heads and need new 2.055 valves" then them sending me 2.02 valves.
No, mine do not look as good as the pics on their site. I guess, like people and dyno numbers, was expecting the numbers to read higher. That's all.

Good point, why don't you talk with David himself. At worse, I bet he would work out a deal with you if indeed they do not flow what is advertised but on their own bench.
Q though, I thought MTI heads all came with a flow sheet?

I bought these used from a board member. Then called MTI for that flow sheet (they keep records of all flow sheets) but couldn't find it.

Speek to David and see if you can send him back the heads for inspection and perhaps freshening for a little fee.
there is always a way and from my personal experience, David will work very hard to make as fair for both of you.

the heads were just freshened 200 miles ago. Maybe I just expected too much. My dyno numbers weren't horrible, just a little low as is the flow numbers.

Those look like 2E numbers, not 2R. It may not be MTI's fault. Maybe the heads you bought are really 2E heads and since you contacted MTI with the part number, they sent you 2.02" valves because that's what you really have. I would be feeling like:

I've been there.... , and I feel for you. good luck.

who freshened the heads? If it wasn't MTI it's your baby. What most people do not understand is most shops use a specific valve job if it is changed the heads may not flow. I have seen people kill heads having a local shop do a valve job on them. Always return them to the shop that did them or another well know reputable shop.

Hey theres a # on the back of the MTI Heads and they should be able to crosscheck them to make sure they are 2R or 2E Heads. Call them with the # and see
