what combinations can be used to make the 383 ls1.

id rather not make it all stroke.... and not all bore....
but if you have a good reason(s) for doing so please inform me.


what setup would you reccomend (as far as what bore and what stroke and rod length)

would my cam still sound a little choppy in the 383 or would it just gulp it down...


im looking to make about a 11:1 CR motor that would run on no more than a 250 shot... but would mainly run NA cause i bracket race and drive it on the road... 250 would be for the dirty snakes

what parts to use inside... or who should i talk to about this...

Well you can't hone the regular LS1 block out very far so thats why the 383 is a 4 inch stroke and a 3.905-ish bore usually and they run great and make more torque and power down lower than a 346 will with the same cam and heads. You can do a sleeved engine but then why not make it a 427 instead of the all bore 383 when you are already spending the money.

Depends on the year, but it's not much, at all.

You'd want to stay with 3.905 or less.

Yes.

Depends on the size of sleeves and what type of sleeving system (wet or dry).

Cost = expect just a block w/sleeves installed to be about $2600-$2900 w/out any final machine work done.

Shop around, get written quotations with fully disclosed parts.
Bryan at LME http://www.latemodelengine.com/ was the best (as per my experience). He took time to listen and tailor the setup as per MY requests.
With some others, I would ask for X and they would quote me Y.

I had HPE machine and assemble my 383. Couldn't be happier. Erik know's his stuff and is great to work with. Give him a call, his number is in the first reply to this thread.

You might also consider starting with an LS2 block...

I was surprised no one had said that yet. If it were me, I'd do the LS2 also. They weren't avalible when my motor was built, so 383 was the only choice. With the LS2, the factory sleeves are larger.(4") This with the 4" stroke gets you a 402. This is a perfect combination between bore and stroke. It'll all bolt in the same as your motor, but you have to splce a few wires, no big deal. A few sponsors are running a sale on these motors for $3995. (shortblock)

Not if your block is alright! I think the biggest piston I can get thats not a custom is 3.908 bore. Also the iron block is a great choice and is super strong and you go up to 4.030 bore then. We have both in stock. If you have the time give me a cal as well since there are many options but you don't have to junk your own block as most clean up fine as long as they haven't been run out of oil etc. and then even some are saveable as well. There aren't nearly as many ring options in 3.90X for power adders but you could still use a good moly ring if you are very safe on the tune with the nos.
