305 To 350?
my friend has a 89rs camaro 5speed, with a 305 tbi.
we can get our hands on 2 seperate 350s. one being out of a 86 (tbi) 4x4, it started smoking a little so a new 350 was put in. another one is out of a 76 pontiac, its a 350 4bbl. both of them are in front of automatics, would these motors be able to bolt up to a 5speed? with the factory parts?

Is the 350 in the Poncho an actual poncho or chevy 350?
How much work are looking to do in either case?
Easiest would be to rebuild/mod the 86 while it's out of the car & then drop it in, x-fering
all teh accessories from teh 305.

its in the pontiac so i am guessing its a pontiac?
we goin to put as much work as it takes to get it running good. we might get it bored small bit with forgded pistons, cam, rods? what every my friend wants? what about the injectors and different motor sizes, 305 to 350, anykind of differnet tune for correct amount of fuel? i think the 350 out of the 86 truck is complete w/ heads and all. so we would tear it down and put some goodies in it. the motors are free so all we goin to be out of is parts $.

The Pontiac uses a different bell housing along with different accessories and possibly custom motor mounts. The Truck engine will drop right in. You will probably have to use the car mounts and accessories, but they will bolt right on. The Chevy engine will be cheaper to rebuild too. If you’re not sure about the engines, just look at them. The Chevy and Pontiac engines are visibly different. You will need a 350 chip for the 305 computer, but I believe it will still run with the 305 chip. You could check with some of the sponsers or Jet Performance? Jet can program a custom chip for cam, headers, ect.

Get the Chevy 350. Easy swap, though it ownt be any kind of HP monster but better than that turd LO3. If I was you, personally, dump the TBI setup, grab an AFPR and swap over to carb. TBI isnt that great and TPI marginally better mainly necause it kills you after 4500RPm and your powerband is a steep decrease, like the side of a mountain.
buy the 350 and go carb!

The 350 will be an easy road.
As always, budget dictates everything, and in some areas so does emissions testing.
If you are concerned with passing smog, then a carb swap won't do. If not, that would make an easy performance makeover.
There are some stout TPI style systems out there, but again budget, and install skills come into play.
If budget is an issue, then I would get a TBI setup from a 350 truck, and purchase a PROM setup for a 350 with mods.
Now as far as spending big money on a bottom end, unless you are building BIG power, and from your question I'm guessing not, you don't need forged rods and the like.
A good set of hyperuetectics on a set of stock rods w/bolts, will work nicely. Spend the money on cyl. heads, this and the proper cam will be where the fun factor come in.

use the chevy 350 and keep the tbi it has more potential than most people think. my 3600 pound truck went 12.9xx before the 60e let go. if you want more advice and a possible chip for it pm me some details and we can work something out.
