Unhappy So how long till she blows?

*No Pics for you "we need pic's guys*
Changed the oil yesterday and the drain plug was covered with pieces of metal, nice shiney silver metal. A **** load of little slivers of metal were on here too. I had them all on a paper towel to take a picture, etc, but I went to move it and lost the stuff.. Nothing thick at all, couple about 1/4" long but 1/16" wide or so. Holds good oil pressure, now for some reason, before the oil change (even when full) it was sittin a little above what looked to be 30psi on the guage at idle. The only noises I can hear are at idle sometimes, where its knocking, but it doesnt sound like its an internal problem, sounds external from the drivers seat.

So lets throw some ideas around on how far she will go. I figure the bearings are going bad, and I dont have much left on her.

I guess the Power Tour did own me in a way (you know who you are that bet me something would **** up... *** )

30 psi @ idle? Mine is always just above 40 @ idle. I agree, it sounds like it could be bearings. Good point above also. If so, check your rocker arms. That is no good. I will guess 6 months if you take it kind of easy, and < 3 if your hard on it. Sorry to hear about that. Good reason to build another though right?

No it wasnt the needle bearings. I cringe when I pull the drain plug all the time, just fearing needle bearings.

Good reason to build another, yes. Bad that I was going to order a rearend and some slicks in the next few days.....

Im hoping it lasts for a while, but who knows...

The oil pressure is more now after the change though... Correct me if I'm wrong, but if the filter was clogged that might cause low pressure readings right? Or is the pressure sender picked up away from the oil filter and near the pump... ?

I bet it was clogged with all the metal shavings. Cut your old filter apart and check it out. I'd think if your filter was plugged then you may lose some oil pressure.

I plan on doing that when I get home.

If I'm not mistaken, I believe that the oil pressure sender is at the back of the intake manifold, you know, the thing everyone breaks when changing manifolds, because they forget to unplug it, but I'm not sure.

the oil pressure sending unit takes the pressure after the oil has oiled everything, which should be the lowest pressure. a clogged oil filter will LOWER pressure.

i think he is wondering that if maby the oil pressure sending unit is BEFORE the filter, a clogged fliter will cause a HIGHER reading, but this is not the case

Brandon quit making excuses why your car is slow

I say cut the filter open and see what you find. I don't think if it would make that much a difference if it is full of shavings but I could be wrong (I'm not often wrong)

I'm going to guess a bearing for now

Thanks for your opinion Chris,

The Blur, thanks for the info. I was figuring that if it was clogged it would read lower....

The maybe good news is that bearing material isn't ferrous, so that's not what was stuck to your magnetic drain plug. If you have bearing problems, that material will be buried in your oil filter pleats.

But the metal that could have come off the crank from damage is. If there is metal in the oil you shouldn't drive it. If there is a bearing problem and you continue to drive it your just going to do more damage. The best bet is to pull it now where the damage is at a minimal unless you plan on throwing a whole new short block at it.
